how to format swap partition?

#1 Post by o4tuna »

Trying to rearrange some partitions, swap was initially set up as an extended partition, I need to change this.
Gparted won't allow it, as it's active as a swap partition
(hdd install)
I tried right click & swap off
I tried terminal & swapoff
I tried terminal & swapoff -a
I tried terminal & swapoff -a /dev/sda5
I tried terminal & swapoff /dev/sda5
I tried booting from the cd & it grabs the swap partition & won't let go either...

If <puppy pfix=ram< doesn't work - mostly likely it does not - run the GPartEd liveCD to delete and then reinstall your swap partition where and how you like it.
If you're really brave, DOS Fdisk might delete it!!

You're in luck. Ladislav just told us about a new version:

o4tuna, I believe Sage assumed you'd boot the live CD with the puppy pfix=ram option. Is that what you did, and it didn't work? This is for my own curiosity. It seems to me it should have worked.

starting puppy with
"puppy pfix=ram"
doesn't / won't work - BUT - all I've ever had to do to sort this out was to run the 'mut' (media utility tool ?)
you can see in muts' display the swap partition, and there is a button you can click to turn 'swapoff'
- okay, I'm assuming everyone has the same as me - but that's how it looks/works on my system.

I noticed something similar a while back; swapoff wouldn't seem to do the job, but MUT's button did. Never did figure out why.

Look at the output of the "free" command using the two methods.

pcguru, I tried it and you are correct. Puppy uses the swap partition anyway. :(

Silly me  I thought "puppy pfix=ram" was something I was supposed to type in a terminal window.
Also did't realize the text in mut was a button!
Hey that worked!
Formatting that partition as we speak.
Thanks! :D
