You are running as root so sudo is unneccessary. You need to download the devx_421.sfs here and load it to have the make command.

You need to describe your installation and hardware to obtain help on how to install the sfs. It sounds like you may have a full hd installation which is more difficult to install a sfs file. A better approach since Puppy 4.2.1 is way out of date is to install a later puppy. You should try Wary, Racy,Lucid or Slacko which are up-to-date and they have versions which work on a wide variety of hardware. Be sure and download both the iso and devx files. If you have problems with them, you should post on their threads to get assistance. They are also available at ibiblio. They have a great program to handle sfs files called "SFS-Load on-the-fly".
It may run on Puppy 4.2.1.

Welcome to puppy.

thank you jim1911 for your answer,

I desinstalled puppy because it's in english and very slow, it's hard for me to work with and I installed TOTO4.2.1 which is a french version but I have the same problems that the puppy.
do you think that toto is better than puppy4.2.1??or should I install one of the versions you suggeted?
you asked me to describe the installation and the hardware so which information do I need to mention ??
thanks a lot.

I'm not familiar with TOTO. With puppy 4.2.1 being so slow it sounds like you have an older machine with 64M or less ram. Puppy runs completely in ram, running from a CD, or in a frugal installation so it should be extremely fast. I'd suggest that you try Wary from a CD first, it works well with older hardware and is a long time support version. I believe that it does have French locales available.

Basic installations on a hard drive are frugal (preferred) and full hd (possibly better on low ram hardware, also needs a swap partition). You may also run from a CD or install on a usb hard drive if your hardware supports it. You just need to describe your type of installation, available ram, etc. Also how you did your installation and observations about your problem or what you are trying to accomplish.

I agree with Jim1911 - try Wary on your hardware.

Wary has a French language pack - not sure how comprehensive it is-

also, there is a French sub-forum here on murga-

that may be useful.

Puppy 4 series comes with su but NOT with sudo .

Would have to look for Puppy 5 series until end of 2010 if sudo included .

Would guess that later Puppies should have sudo , especially since beginning of this year .

I am running Pup 4.3 kernel 2.6.30 series from year 2001 320 MB RAM 1,045 GH to now year 2008 dual core 2,6 GHz 4 GB RAM .

I think 4.1 kernel is 2.6.25 and a IDE kernel . Would suggest a SATA kernel like 2.6.30.5 or 2.6.33.2 .

I have configured my kernels with both ( IDE and SATA ) and no problems . Kernel size is approx 1-1,5 MB larger : 3592 K(i)B lzma compressed .

With this hardware, go for a frugal installation of Racy or better yet, Slacko.
