Ram memory not all recognized

#1 Post by CRF »

I have a Gateway Laptop that has 4GB of ram memory installed. When I go to menu, system, hardinfo-Hardware information it seems to only recognize 3Gb of my ram, under total memory. Am I looking in the wrong place or is there something going on that I don't know about?

Depending on the version or variant of Puppy you're using, it's possible you won't see all the RAM installed on your computer. If I remember correctly, this is because older versions of the Linux kernel can only "see" up to a certain level of RAM. Never fear, though. Have faith in the Linux memory management system. It far exceeds the performance of that of Microsoft.

Puppy is a 32 bit operating system (though a variant called FatDog64 has been made with a 64-bit Linux kernel.) It seems to me that a 32-bit operating system should be able to see (directly address) 2^32 or 4,294,967,296 memory locations, but for some reason I've never understood, neither 32-bit Windows nor 32-bit Linux can see more than about 3.3 GB of RAM. That's just the way it is. Puppy works well. I'm happy. :D
