MSN video chat with Puppy on a Macbook[SOLVED]

Hello,

i have a macbook that i would like to boot into puppy to use amsn so i can video chat with my friends (as msn msger 8 for mac doesnt support this)

i have heard about ubuntu having a howto to extract the drivers for isight and plant them into its the filesystem

is this possible to do in puppy? ive been using puppy for awhile, love it, and hope this is doable.

perhaps i can extract the drivers like the ubuntu howto explains, then plant them into puppy? does anybody know where to copy the drivers to?

Apparently the iSight is firewire-based, and in Linux you need the standard "video1394" and "raw1394" modules (and maybe the "vloopback" module?) in combination with the libdc1394 library.
After installing the libdc1394-2.1.0-libraw-2.0.2 dotpet, reboot and check if the video1394 and raw1394 modules are loaded, with this command -

Code: Select all

lsmod

If you don't see them listed, load them manually, like this -

Code: Select all

modprobe video1394
modprobe raw1394

Now launch your webcam application and try to enable your webcam. If no success, install the vloopback-1.2-k2.6.25.16 dotpet, and load this new module -

Code: Select all

modprobe vloopback

Now try again.

I think you're referring to the iSight firmware, not drivers. This might (??) be necessary to upgrade (or downgrade) the webcam's features, but I don't think it's essential.

the 1 on my macbook is built in to the screen. system info shows its USB based.

The iSight is definitely referred to as a firewire device, but it may be on a firewire-USB bridge.
So I recompiled libdc1394 again with USB support and added the libusb-1.0.0 library. Now in the compilation I see this: "IIDC-over-USB support: Enabled".
Please download again and re-install.

Hi efdeel,

Welcome to the kennels. Semme gets 'right to the point', which occasionally fails to identify context. I, on the other hand, tend to create confusion by being overly loquacious such that the point gets buried in the context. There are over 5000 Puppy versions; roughly 30 currently active, all similar, but different and all potentially being used by someone. Only God and Google knows how many computer hard-ware versions exist.

So:
Exactly which Puppy. The ISO you downloaded has the exact name. So does the Title of the thread you may have opened to download the ISO.
Exactly which Macbook? Make and Model.

Does msn chat still exist? Exactly what are you trying to accomplish? Have you considered alternatives?

There is, of course, the added complication that Crapple like to make it very awkward for their hardware to work under anything other than MacOS.....naturally, they take it for granted you're going to be using their OS..!

This isn't to say it can't be done, but the path to success may be somewhat longer and more rocky than it might otherwise be.....

We'll do what we can to help, but, as has been requested by others, always, always, always let us have:-

Exact make/model/specifications of your hardware.
Exact details of the Puppy you're trying to/want to use.....name, architecture (a link to the thread is always helpful!)

Just makes it easier all round, for everyone concerned. A lot of Puppy software/workarounds will work with multiple Puppies.....but not always.

Generally, no (which is why I'm wondering if efdeel should have started a new topic rather than post in an old thread about aMSN). Microsoft was quick to end MSN Messenger in favor of Skype and its chat services. They may still have something at the corporate/enterprise levels, but I doubt it.

Thanks, I go to that url and they use command line in terminal...

now I can not run my Puppy terminal.

Both ways did nothing:
1. Click Terminal on the tray
2. Menu > Utility > Urxvt terminal emulator
Both did nothing, not open any window etc, just nothing.
