nVidia GeForce 7150m Graphical Glitch

#1 Post by RetroProfessional »

EDIT: ISSUE FIXED, SEE PAGE 2 FOR MORE INFO

When using Puppy Linux on livecd and just installed on the HDD, i get these weird black bars, screen was all missplaced and i cant use it unless i change the resolution to 4:3 (1024x768 or 800x600). This issue is very annoying and i would like some answers ASAP.

What machine?
What Puppy?

Maybe bad match of kernel (or Xorg?) and machine.

In addition to the above, Nouveau driver or have you tried to install the driver from nVidia?

WHAT PUPPY VERSION?
Specific info.
Example:
bionicpup64 8.0

We only know what you tell us.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

It does this with any resolution setting you use?

to reply on all I'm using latest xenialpup version and kernal 4.9.58 and yes every resolution I try, just a garbled mess, 1024x768 and 800x600 work.

Puppy version info needs to be specific.
Latest Xenialpup version.
Is it?
xenialpup 7.5 (32bit)?
xenialpup64 7.5 (64bit)?

I am confused by your answer.
yes every resolution I try, just a garbled mess, 1024x768 and 800x600 work.
1024x768 and 800x600 work.
To me says those resolutions are not doing this.
Does 1024x768 look bad to you or are you all hung up about using something other than the native resolution?

Are you trying to get resolution 1280x800?
I think this is your answer.

Probably will need to be using a Nvidia driver, not the generic nouveau driver, to get 1280x800.

I can tell you how to get a Nvidia driver, but I need the specific info on what exact version of Xenialpup you are using?
Also how you have xenialpup installed?
When using Puppy Linux on livecd and just installed on the HDD
Did you do a frugal or full install to the HDD?
Which install do you want to use?
The live CD or the HDD install?

The best way to give this information is the name of the iso file that you used. e.g. xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso

xenialpup64, i think i did frugal install, also I'm trying to get the NVIDIA Driver. both 1024x768 and 800x600 work fine, it's just every other resolution I try, it doesn't work.

Use Pupsysinfo (menu>system>) for info.
Maybe you have inxi or lshw in terminal.

You should know what nvidia gc you have.
You can find on nvidia website what driver it needs (google 'nvidia unix driver').
There are good ones from shinobar here for xenialpup64:
http://shinobar.server-on.net/puppy/opt ... nialpup64/

Also read this to install it properly:

These are some 64-bit nvidia drivers for kernel 4.9.58
I will let you do the research on whether they support your particular card.
That info is available from the nvidia web site.
Don't try one of these until you know that it will support your particular nvidia card.

In the link I posted:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 51#1030151
Before installing the driver make sure nouveau is not loaded and will not be loaded on reboot.
I do this by booting to the prompt with pfix=nox. Then execute

Code: Select all

rmmod nouveau
xwin
You could also blacklist nouveau in Set > Puppy Setup > Startup > Modules.
Puppy will start up with some general driver that does not interfere with nvidia.

Easiest way I know to blacklist

Open file etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Add the text blacklist nouveau to the list

save the file and reboot.

---------------
If you need to undo then remove what you added.

What is "safe mode"? Do you not have an option "no X" or "nox"?
How have you installed Puppy to HDD? What bootloader are you using? Grub4dos?
If so, look for menu.lst on your boot partition.
Open it as text, find the entry for Puppy, copy it, add pfix=nox to the kernel line, change the title and save menu.lst.
On next boot you should have the new entry. The boot should stop on the command prompt.
