Not sure if all of you have been aware of this drama the past year, and especially as it escalated this past month and reached a crescendo the past 3-4 days. Will we all look back one day and realize this act (or lapse) was the first beginning of the end of the Internet as we now know it? Will the assault in earnest begin as the so-called "balkanization" of the net begins? I honestly don't know, maybe it is much ado about nothing. Oe, taking it even further, maybe this is what is/was needed to finally put the first death nail into the coffin of our ideas about the internet as we now know & think about it. It's no secret Google, Amazon, FB, Alibaba, etc around the world have been pushing for their ability to create a completely closed (fully uncrackable) ether net world---all in, (cough, cough) their claim that they want their customers to be safe & secure. They call it 'Internet 2', among other naming schemes, and increasingly, lump it in with the "Internet of Everything" talk (which is scary---when you think about things like Google Nest and all, same with Amazon's stuff). And this all doesn't even factor in what many gov'ts around the world are going to start doing with the now existing Internet 1 as we know it

(plz note for the linked articles below, which give quick synopsis/reading of this whole thing: normally I don't give much credence to the quite a bit of craziness the "Breitbart.com" news site comes up with. But in this case, they hit the nail on the head, with short, concise, easy to understand articles)
