Ham Radio

#1 Post by Geoffrey »

Well after near on 20 years I've decided to reapply for my amateur radio license,
might take me a month or so to get a Round-Too-It as I'm a little slow at getting things done.

I previously held a Novice and Limited license and looking at the changes it seems
I will be able to obtain the Advanced due to there not being a Morse requirement of 10 wpm, my Novice was at 5wpm.

I hope to get my old call sign back VK4JGP, I'll most likely stick with vhf/uhf as
I don't have the room for HF antennas and being on a budget it's rather inexpensive to to obtain dual band handhelds,
they can be got on ebay for around $60, my last one was a Yaesu FT-23R with all the accessories, that cost a weeks wages back in the day.

I also owned a Yaesu FT 200 HF transceiver, I used that on 80 metres in the evenings after work.

You might find ways out of the limited space antenna problem at

Browse the site...I've got a lot of information there.

Welcome Back.
You will find a lot has changed and a lot has stayed the same in the last 20
years.
Before you buy any HT check out the digital modes of Dstar (Icom)
DMR (Commercial Radios used on the Ham Bands. No Mod to radio necessary)
Fusion (Yaesu) APRS Packet radio done in a new way. (Kenwood)

You will have a lot of fun learning all about the new capabilities.

Enjoy

I have a General Class License but haven't been on a radio for years as I kinda got bored with it. I used to run 2 meter but it just isn't that interesting anymore.

In the good old days we used to chase storms with the local weather department but since the laptop and cell phone we don't get to do that anymore. Still keep my license up though and I may get back into it when I retire this year.

I have a Yaesu FT 411E / 2 meter hand held from the 1980s and an old Heathkit transceiver that is from the 1960s and still works good.

I'm really into the old vacuum tube table radios and like to work on them as I find them at flea markets and thrift stores and collect a few now and then.
