I finally got to see the new "defaults.ctl.card" line in action and how it eliminates that strange wrapper script around alsamixer.bin.jlst wrote:New version, I removed some files ...
1) pinstall.sh (renames alsamixer to alsamixer.bin and alsamixer.script to alsamixer)
2) alsamixer.script
and this:
3) puninstall.sh
Nicely done.
Hello jlst,
I noticed that when I turn my volume off before or during Quicksetup, your new mscw turns it back up to 75% again after the "welcometo1stboot" screen has finished. It seems to be this line in function start_proc of /usr/bin/Multiple-Sound-Card-Wizard:
Since the volume is already set at startup, is this line needed to be run again? Maybe something could be added that says "if the user already changed the volume levels, don't reset everything"? Little annoyance but I'd like to squash it.

Oh, I see, the PET has been removed, pending a rewrite. jlst posted in another thread:BarryK wrote:Guys, jlst wrote:I have updated this utility... check it out and provide some feedback..
Where is the PET to download?
The improvements look good. I am still using v2.2 in Quirky.

Jlst, the ideas look good, go for it!

I updated my version of MSCW, now it's fully compatible even
with Wary Puppy.
It comes with my custom /etc/init.d/10alsa.
Basically the most important thing it has is the Report
button which provides info that can be used to fix issues...

mscw & usb mic
Hello
Have just bought a cheapo webcam off ebay and it comes with a usb mic which I've not encountered before.
I'm posting here because mscw (which is provided by woof-ce: /rootfs-skeleton/usr/bin/Multiple-Sound-Card-Wizard https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... ard-Wizard ) does not see the mic.....
alsamixer does see the mic
as does a webcam application on a website
but there's no controls showing in retrovol to allow the use of the usb mic or to set the levels.
Can anybody provide suggestions as to how to get this usb mic recognised and working - thanks
Various screen shots of mscw, alsamixer, webcam app, and retrovol attached.

Maybe:
webcam app microphone setting changed to the internal audio card instead of default.
Or any of the other settings.
Maybe in Retrovol.
Select and turn up rear mic.
Play with changes to Capture So.
Select and turn up Rear Mic Boost.
Does Pup-Sysinfo show the microphone under devices->

This had no effect?

Hi peebee,
With a webcam althought it is seen as a sound card you do not need to change anything in AlsaMixer.
You do not need to use MSCW.
Leave it as HDA NVidia if that is what you normally have set. If a person is speaking to you, you
want the audio to come from your normal source (eg line out to [amp] speakers/headphones/monitor speakers over HDMI.)
A webcam does not have a speaker.
It does have microphone but generally no volume control as AGC is used (Automatic gain control). It will do the best it can.
You do need to make the correct selections within the appear.in app.
If you are not being offered choices for the microphone within the app, click on the camera icon at the end of the address bar.
In the pop up window that then appears click on "Manage Media Settings" and in Chrome/Chromium settings make sure you select
the USB2.0 PC CAMERA USB Audio-Default Audio Device.
For the Webcam you will see multiple entries just select the first one and ignore Front- speakers/S/PDIF etc.

Thanks for the advice ETP - it does appear that you can configure each application/website to use the cam usb mic on a case by case basis but it's not currently possible to configure the mic to be the default mic used by all applications without individual configuration.....I also wonder whether other browsers such as firefox offer similar configuration settings to chromium? - another days investigation maybe....ETP wrote:If you are not being offered choices for the microphone within the app, click on the camera icon at the end of the address bar.
