I can’t wait
I'm sure it will be awesome
just a suggestion
please take a look at tinycore
you might find you like some of the ways things are put together
it could save you a lot of work
its has the same basic concept as puppy small simple and extendable
and is essentially compatible (with some tweaking)
with the components of puppy like sfs and pet add ons
the only real difference is that is does not use a union file system
instead it uses symlinks which i feel are a superior system
you might want to use some of the ideas in whatever you build for puppy
anyway thanks again for all your hard work and creativity
its really been a shining light for puppy and linux in general
I have given your iso to a lot of people and they have all been blown away by it
regards

I am suggesting that we don't need any new Puppies after TahrPup - hence there is no need for WoofCE apart, perhaps, from some tweaking of TahrPup.learnhow2code wrote: perhaps i misunderstood robin or dont follow you-- are you saying that new puppies will be made using woof-ce or not?
If people are using old hardware TahrPup should have all they need.
If people are using new hardware that may require drivers that are not in TahrPup then the don't really need a cut-down Linux. The laptop I am writing this on has 4GB of Ram. Not so long ago that would have been a big size for a hard disk.
And maybe it is possible to build versions of the drivers that will allow TahrPup to run on newer hardware.
The other side of all this (and what started me off) is that the job of bringing XenialPup to completion may be beyond the capacity of the few Puppy developers. And WoofCE only produces about 50% of the total package - there are also all the separate drivers and applications.

i dont agree at all. most of the advantages of a cut-down distro apply regardless of what kind of platform you run it on. how about this guy (q5sys on this forum i think) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymBQPBEVgQI running puppy on 6 monitors from two video cards?Robin2 wrote:If people are using old hardware TahrPup should have all they need.

of course my opinion doesnt invalidate yours-- now that youve clarified i at least get what youre saying.
theres no system thats so fast that i actually prefer "bloat." only the amount of bloat that is tolerable per-machine changes. you may be happy to know i agree with you that working on old hardware should be a priority for the community. nonetheless, i think we will absolutely need new puppies. i say this as puppy is > 10 years old, and tahr is very new-- why didnt everyone just stick with precise?

I like the work 666philb does. He makes things very colorful, easy to use, and fun.learnhow2code wrote:theres no system thats so fast that i actually prefer "bloat." only the amount of bloat that is tolerable per-machine changes. you may be happy to know i agree with you that working on old hardware should be a priority for the community. nonetheless, i think we will absolutely need new puppies. i say this as puppy is > 10 years old, and tahr is very new-- why didnt everyone just stick with precise?

my definition of "bloat" is definitely more tolerant of features and updates than the typical sentiment around here.
thats as it should be-- puppy needs to have a stricter standard for "lean" than my own. but youll notice a few people here (that actually love old hardware) saying we dont have to be SOOO uptight about every kb.
im happy to stand outside that issue and just do my own thing. theyre doing fine with it imo.
im amazed that puppy hasnt doubled a couple more times in the years since puppy 2.x and now ttuuxx is going to do a retro version with 2 years support? fantastic! if everyone is happy, thats pretty good.

NO. I am using TahrPup on the HP15 while typing this.Sailor Enceladus wrote:@Robin2: Aren't you using Ubuntu 16.04 now, instead of Tahr (Ubuntu 14.04)?
The only thing TahrPup won't do on this machine is operate the Broadcom wifi properly - so I am using an old Belkin USB wifi stick.
I have tried Linux Mint Mate on this HP15 and it installed and figured out all the hardware better than TahrPup. But after that it is not better unless I need a multiuser system (which I don't).
I am debating whether to stick with TahrPup for the life of this laptop or whether to use Mint Mate. If Xenial is completed I may use that - but it seems to have a long way to go. I did try Barry's Quirky but I don't like it because it does not use a savefile which is one of things I like about Puppy.

Might be less confusing if "jlst" account comes back as "wdlkmpx" anyway though. And with this cool avatar:

I know that one was about re-adding slackware 13.37, which I'm building with rationalise now. I had to edit the Packages-puppy-slacko-official file though to fix some deprecated links. It's hackish, and the old stuff is still at the bottom, but seems to be working now (I'm up to "perl" on ./2createpackages). ./3builddistro-Z will be the real test to see if everything goes kersplat, as I'm not sure 13.37 has ever been built with the Z script yet. Maybe jlst deleted his post because he didn't succeed there? heh

I did not have any problems with the input of jlst.
He is clearly technically experienced and I did not grasp all of his comments; to me they added mystery to thread.
His comments on woof are fair critics and rather mild in comparison to things I read in other threads. No reason to delete it.
Sailor, I do not really understand you... so mystery again.

wary, BSD, Tiny C, microsaurus
I follow this thread since a few days now. I find it very exciting.
I also read a thread from Technosaurus: "pupBSD anyone?". I mentionned it before on this thread.
On both threads one finds very experienced people looking for a new challenge and both threads have a lot of points in common. I just take some quotes from the other thread:
There is a point that is different though: cutting edge or retro.
I can not judge which would be best. Can anyone?
Is it a choice between "EVERY piece of hardware" or " ANY distro's packages "? Do we have to choose?
@ttuuxxx
Could it be a common big project?
(Wary is now my main distro, but your VW beetle still appears on my desktop. It's the most beautiful distro I ever had on my PC. Love it.)

I'm already writing this anyhow because I personally want to be able to use other linux distros in addition to freeBSD and netBSD and still have a basic puppy-like desktop.

in the end an operating system --any operating system-- is simply a platform from which to run applications.
If you put this next to the recepee of greengeek (p36) and the messages of wanderer (p36 and p37) ... well see for yourself.technosaurus wrote: I think that woof is a totally unnecessary step. My goal is to have a basic starting point from which you can just download any distro's packages ... a bastard love child of tiny core and woof raised in a commune of puppy fans. When you have tweaked it to fit your taste and/or specific hardware, you can export it to a squashfs, initrd, ISO, tarball, or even (preferably) a single metapackage

Re: Slacko 13.37 with woof-ce. The build is working with zdrv kernel 3.14.75. I had to manually add cdrkit, libdc1394, and re-add /boot/depmod, /usr/share/mini-icons, some programs have missing libraries (abiword and gnome/mplayer), only Dougal's Network Wizard let me connect to wi-fi, it doesn't let me mount ext4 and thinks it's ext3, desktop chat is set to pidgin even though xchat exists, but other than that it seems ok so far and I'm posting this message from SeaMonkey 2.10.1 lol.

Yes I put a lot of love in 2.14x, I'll be doing it again. I still use 2.14X on and off, even on my latest PC I built a couple months back it ran fine. I'm not sure If its a dead project or not yet. It just needs so much work now to stay up with the latest browser dependencies. Its like a domino effect all the way down to changing glibc, gcc again.foxpup wrote: @ttuuxxx

hi again
please take a look at tinycore
they have a solution to keeping the browser (firefox) up to date
i would really like to see 214 continue
not only because it is awesome and beautiful
but its a piece of history
i think if it was just restructured a little
all the parts could be used and further developed
i did this myself and have some really interesting morphs of 214
but i didn't have the expertise to totally isolate all the components
especially the browser
actually the fact that the browser
could no longer support the ant downloader
was the only problem i had
214 still works fine on all my computers
even the windows 10 ones
214 and its morphs should live forever
and keep it on the old 214 thread
its history man
however i do propose that ttuuxxx renames it
to properly reflect that it is his creation
