robin 2, did you try with Gxine.. DVDplayer has no bug at home,
I agree there is a big problems with DVDs in newest Puppies, much more important than icons on the desktop
XineDVD-1.29-Lucid.pet: 2543 K disponible ibiblio org. works well.

Thanks. That seems to work very well - but I hope it will be possible to get VLC working equally well.

Hi

I did grown the ISO to my average level and it did go pretty, The ISO has now the size of ab. 570 Mb. Diverse apps are installed, appear on the menu or on the desktop (scratch2 with Air, see the print screen left in the middle!) and start but are instabil or disturb completely the system.

Is a list of adequate app's available?

The major add's are following
(in the order as they appear in the jwm menu!)

Lazy remaster
(it did produce the new 570 Mb ISO easily with my own file names!)
Lazy SFSplus
skype 2.1 (it starts but doesn't find the server, see print screen)
gramps
granule
rawtherapy
rawstudio
YAGF
kompoZer
TED
(I like rtf doc's as they are REALLY compatible and open  ... This is NOT the case with other more modern and perhaps performant doc's from the named "free" world  ! Excuse me: It is so...)
bluefish
(geany is terribly bad: only one instance! excuse me, it belongs to the middle age of informatik!)
speedCrunch
(I would like a financial calculator but did not find some one! no problem for me, in my desk I have a real HP12C with the first battery in it and it continues to work, I did try it before I did write those lines! but I would more use it if it would be on my PC / flyer / laptop... scientific calculators are not important: about all modern calculator app's are able to make then! It is nonsens to offer more than one, but a good one! excepted speedCrunch as it propose somewhat different!)
merkaartor
xombrero
(i am using xombrero now! pretty... it is defined as my standard browser in /usr/local/bin! palemoon is not erased but I absolutely not like palemoon as it as not some kompoZer ability!)
- not apparent: flashplayer 17 Mb is in my iso for this size -
already named above, skype
NtEd
(I can't understand how so much persons can live without some music editor! . Those ISOs are bad for children and adolescent persons...)
Pulseaudio
Pulseaudio Volume Control
2 Pulseaudio Volume Meter
XvidCap
a lot of hunspell's
a lot of Asian fonts (Devanagari and Tamil, Chinese, Japanes, Korean)

I am now searching for stabil app's for those purposes and propose you the discussion and following up of the progress!

Kind regards

PS: I will also try it with the now available 64 bit version. But I am afraid I will not reach the full goal...

PS2: -diverse app's above have -not-equivalents in Puppy, calculator, editors, web browser, text processing... I find it is not good to use a perhaps better browser (palemoon without some HTML editor) but the old ones out of date from Puppy :x (geany, abiword being unable to really communicate with other text app's, usw.). it is not logic at all... completely the old puppy definition would be ok! it is the definition... half / half is not ok... the user has to desinstall a lot to become the real old puppy definition AS WELL to install his prefered app's if he wants it... in both cases it is not really optimal

Very happy that DVDs are usable with Xenialpup

Very happy that DVDs are usable with Xenialpup with old lucid apps.. :!: Until A solution got for VLC...
Oui, you do as you like, you choose your own SFS, and load them on the fly. That is a clever choice.
I will add 'unmount SFS when no longer needed' that is a good management.
Load your car with a pair of skis when you go on winter holidays, and with a parasol when you go on the beach. No need to keep them always loaded..
Let Gramps Loaded, you can check during holidays birthdates of your ancêtres français. Buy a dongle fo get wireless connexion easier (for Skype)
Dont forget your Nikon special Raw pictures (very expensive, be careful)
Very important : if your hosts have a computer , just take a pendrive or a mini-cd , with Puppy Toutou 436 and Tahpup 6.0.2 on it.
:) And be careful with your Motor-Bike (Harley ?)

version 5.0.3 from Xenialpup PPM. Homebank now is GTK3,

#186 Post by Pelo »

Homebank and Grisbi are my applications to check how rich i am. Homebank last versions do their job. However i downloaded version 5.0.3 from Xenialpup PPM. Homebank now is GTK3,
My data from previous homebank versions are serviceable with 5..0.3.
People having passed through possible problems with install, can start working for House finance management (unless they would like to test Xenialpup 64).
 Always tell your wife that your Puppy has bugs, to avoid she gives you boring money management to do with homebank or Gnu Cash, or Grisbi..

I have noticed a strange problem with Xenialpup.
Immediately after a boot some applications take a long..... time to display, and the mouse seems frozen. Sometimes after they eventually appear, it's a blank window, but the buttons appear if you move the mouse over them.
I tried changing kernels to the Tahrpup 6.0.5 one that works fine, but this made no difference.

Looking at "dmesg", I find it ends with the following:

Code: Select all

[drm] GPU HANG: ecode 7:0:0xbbaff7f8, in Xorg [6664], reason: Ring hung, action: reset
[drm:i915_set_reset_status [i915]] *ERROR* gpu hanging too fast, banning!
drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang
On googling the error message I found the suggestion that with my hardware, the intel i915 video driver may need to use "UXA" acceleration method rather than "SNA", the default.

I also found the following suggestion as to how to do this.
Create an empty text file as "/etc/x11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf".
Edit this empty file and add the following content:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection
It worked. Afer a reboot, the problem has gone away.
And no error messages at the end of "dmesg".

Making graphics drivers does not like me

Anyone make any Nvidia drivers for Xenialpup?

I need the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.39 driver.

I downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.39.run package from Nvidia web site.
I have loaded the devx and kernel sfs, but I keep getting errors when making the driver.

on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I was doing a backup with xenial 7.0.1, after installing the bugfix, of the main hd sda1 to sdb1:

Code: Select all

cp -a /mnt/sda1/* /mnt/sdb1/
The command ended in error because during copy the sdb1 usb hd changed to sdc1 and then sdd1... I booted racy and:

Code: Select all

cp -a -u /mnt/sda1/* /mnt/sdb1/
was executed without errors. I think the util-linux has some bugs.

This is awesome.

Only complaint I have is that every time I reboot or restart X, I lose my wifi settings. I have to run Simple Network Setup all over again. (It saves my configuration, but won't load it, so I have to delete it.)

Other than that, it's perfect, thanks. :)

I have now been trying a HP15-af154sa laptop and VLC works fine. The only problem is lack of support for the Broadcom BCM43142 WiFi card. I have asked about that in this Broadcom Thread.

Incidentally VLC and other stuff is also working perfectly with 32bit Tahrpup.

Hi just wondering when this will become an official puppy. Official means it will replace the tahtpup download option on puppylinux.com website.

Update: Palemoon started to get really laggy after about 40 minutes and slowed everything down to a crawl (100% CPU usage), not sure why as all I had open was a few Puppy Forum tabs. Right-clicking it and pressing Kill fixed it for now.
palemoon is not the best browser option. i have a version of the official firefox that will run on any os and needs no compiling. and it automatically updates too. i use this in all puppy os. adn make the corect links and .desktop files eetc and it works great. I cant remember where i got the firefox version from origionally sorry. but it works better. i am going to download xenialpup and try it out myself. will let you know who the official updated firefox works

The first thing i notice is that there is no Quickpet installed. quickpet was the place in Tahrpup you would apply the puppy updates, install sfs and other apps and handy things for puppy os. including many generic sfs files directly.

all other things you would get from the ubuntu apps after updating the ubuntu repositories. most things would run.

just missing quickpet.

Perhaps we should buy a new computer

same problems with Palemoon, but Palemoon is not guilty. The kernel is.
Let the mechanics check for it.
Install an older kernel solves the problems. Perhaps we should buy a new computer

HiDeHo,

This is still Beta quality and is in bug fix and testing.

Quickpet is something, I am sure, will be in the finished final release version.

The finished, final release version of Xenialpup, is the one that needs to be shown on Distrowatch.
Not ready for that yet!
