Can't record sound from the microphone (RESOLVED)

#1 Post by tometo »

I noticed with Skype, that the person on the other side can't hear me at all.
I tryied to record something with Sweep and... nothing. I can here my voice in the ears (I use headphones), but can't record it... When I switch to Ubuntu everything works.
My sound card is C-Media (but I don't remember which series).

Maybe I'm doing something wrong...

Thanks in advance

Skype works for me, but my voice is very very faint. Nothing I've tried has made it any louder. Neither the Zmixer GUI or alsamixer from the console have any effect on the microphone volume. It worked much better in 2.12. I've never recorded anything from the microphone.

No my card is not a USB card. I found the model is C-Media PCI CM8738-MC6.

Sorry, I guess I thought C-Media only made USB cause mine is.

I'll keep watching to see if I can help at all. I've been messing with ALSA a lot recently.

Hi all,
I am having fun with the little pup of mine V2.13 FINAL , 'FLASH' could you
tell me if your ZMIXER has a balance control? Should it have one? If not
maybe I should try and dump it, and go for AUDCITY or something else, help required please!

No, no balance control in my Zmixer, or alsamixer (from the console) either.

gamix gives the illusion it would work, as there are two sliders for each level. But they only move together :-(

I suppose the lack of a balance control is not a bug but a limitation of the audio software in Puppy. Is there any mixer for Linux that has a working balance control?

I've found solution here:
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=66544

The sound capture channel is not swiched on by default in Puppy. This could be resolved by using alsamixer (console mixer).

To do this, open console and write there: alsamixer
Moving between the channels: TAB, LEFT-RIGHT ARROWS;
Change the volume value: UP-DOWN ARROWS
IMPORTANT! To switch sound capture, use SPACE on the mic channel.

That's it.

I'm having trouble getting my mic to to work as well. I've tried the alsamixer thing, but nothing changes when I hit "space" when the "Input So" (mic) channel is selected.

Try pressing the period "." instead of the space bar. That seemed to let me toggle between the available selections.

Skype works OK in John Murga's version Puppy 2.02 Opera that includes Xtmix.

Thanks tometo and crackedpepper, those tips helped me get it working.

I just wanted to add that in my alsamixer there is an entry for 'Mic Boost (+20dB)' which helped improve the volume of my speaking in Skype. For some reason it appears in the 'Playback' and 'All' sections of alsamixer and not the 'Capture' section. I turned it on by hitting '.'
