Installing programs gives triplicate Menu entries in Slacko

#1 Post by bjn »

A quick introduction first since this is my first post. I switched to Puppy in December 2013 because XP's support was coming to an end. That was an ill wind that blew me a lot of good, because I would probably never have given Linux a second thought if XP hadn't been orphaned, but now I'm so glad I know about Puppy. :)

Puppy is my main OS, thanks to you regulars who answered all my questions and solved all my problems, even though I never posted a question. I didn't need to, because you had already answered and already anticipated all the newbie questions. Puppy has got to be the friendliest distro, with the friendliest forum.

On to the reason I came out of lurkdom: For some reason, whenever I install certain multimedia programs I end up with triplicate menu entries. Right now I have three entries for my Audacious sfs and three entries for my Express Scribe tarball. The programs work fine, but I dislike the extra clutter in the menu list and would like to clear it if possible. Using the Menu Manager doesn't work - it just removes all three Audacious entries, and Express Scribe doesn't appear at all in the list in the Menu Manager, so I can't even try to get rid of the entries that way.

I'm using Slacko 5.7 on a USB stick, but the problem existed in version 5.6
.
(My apologies if this issue has already been addressed in the forum, but I haven't come across anything about it yet.)

Have you seen this http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63006 ? And this http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63009?
There is a page in the wikki concerning this http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Configure_PuppyMenu.
Of course this is presuming you are using the standard Jwm .
Good luck.

Yes I totally agree with you this is indeed a brilliant community that treats everyone equally whether novice or expert.

Thank you, alphadog. It was very kind of you to hunt down those links for me. (I should have known that somewhere this issue had been dealt with!) I will check them out. And yes, I'm using JWM. :)

Just wondering where you are getting these programs?
How do you install them?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
