initrd.gz not found at Boot, but it's there

I'm using Lupu 5.2.8 and I keep getting this error message when booting. Luckily I have a Slacko install too so I can still talk to you.

When I investigate the Lupu folder initrd.gz is there, so I'm somewhat puzzled.

Also while I'm here, how do I delete old installations of Puppy?

Well at a guess you have some form of grub booting so look out for menu.lst (might be in a boot folder) and your answers may be in there.

how do I delete old installations of Puppy?

Easy way is to boot with a Puppy live CD or USB flash drive install.
Use the file manager to delete the Puppy installs.
If Puppy install, is a full install, delete it by reformatting the partition the full install is on.

If you use Grub or Grub4dos boot loader, run its config program to remove entry for Puppy installs you delete.

It's a frugal install to the HD. Menu.lst looks fine. I'm using Grub4Dos as the bootloader.

Try doing a delete and reinstall of Lupu 528.

If this does not work, give specific info on exactly where on HDD install is.
Partition, directory, sub directory, etc....

I reinstalled Lupu again; same story; works great for a fortnight or so then I get this error again

Well if its working and then not working this would suggest to me some form of corruption going on.
What format is the partition the initrd is on...I
s it on the same one as slacko?
How old is the hard drive?
Do you get any other errors with other systems?

Is the frugal install on a Windows ntfs formatted partition?
If yes, you need to make sure you defrag partition, using Windows defrag, before you install Lupu 528.

A Windows partition that is fragmented can cause Puppy to get fragmented and hard to find.
