Can somebody please help me with this. I am using Opera 12.15 (in Carolina007rc3).

Flash is sometimes working, sometimes not.

The site for TED talks works in Firefox but not in Opera. See:

It is kind of weird because the website for the Dutch tv news, i.e.
http://nos.nl/nieuws/live/journaal24/ does work perfectly in Firefox and Opera.

Thanks for the flashplayer11-11.2.202.285 version (more recent than what is in the Carolina repo). But unfortunately it does not solve the issue.

I get the error message that "Shockwave flash has crashed". And at the download page which you posted nothing happens.

This is a sad day for long-standing supporters of Opera browser. I have tested an early version of the new Opera based on Chromium. It is vastly inferior to the classic Opera and I will not be supporting it. It lacks the features and customisation we loved about Opera.

In the future I intend to use Firefox as my main browser on operating systems that support it. Classic Opera 12.15 is still the best available choice for Racy and Wary and I will continue to make the SFS available for download as long as there is a demand for it.

If you are happy with Opera you can go on using it but there will be no updates to classic Opera. Consequently, over a period of time as web design standards develop it may not work properly on some sites. At that time you may want to move on to a different browser.

I don't want to get involved in discussing the relative merits of Opera and Firefox but here are some of my thoughts. Firefox does work on more sites than Opera. I think Opera's bookmarks and cookie management are better than in Firefox. Opera allows more customisation of the browser. Some people like Opera's built-in mail client and feedreader. These are all personal preferences.

Perhaps the most relevant point is that many of the best features of early Opera were copied by Firefox developers. Therefore, Firefox is the next best thing for anyone seeking a longterm alternative to classic Opera.

No. Opera 12.17 is a fix for Windows only.



In light of the recently reported OpenSSL vulnerability, Heartbleed, Opera has released an update to its latest Opera Presto version 12.16.

Sigbjørn Vik an Opera Developer discusses why the update was necessary:

"Even though Presto does not use any vulnerable parts of OpenSSL, the standalone autoupdater for Opera 12 on Windows does. However, the autoupdater will only connect to our server, and close the connection if the certificate does not validate, so the certificate holders are the only ones who can abuse it. If someone should have stolen our certificate with a heartbleed attack against our servers, they might potentially use it against the autoupdater. The autoupdater runs in a separate process, and doesn’t have much memory to leak, but might potentially leak system information in such a case, such as local username on Windows machines."

Opera 12 for Windows will update itself automatically. Mac and Linux are not affected, and will not receive a 12.17 update.

Hi Terry. I've been using this .sfs in Precise 5.7.1. for a while and never had any problem with it. But... A minor error occurs when downloading .pet files. It seems like Opera cannot handle this file types correctly. At least not when downloading from smokey01.com where few of our devs lay their .pets.
In that case download dialog offers .gz instead of a .pet package.
I'm aware of 'fake .gz' (common on this forum but usually emphasized
as such) but I'm a bit confused because when I click the same link in Seamonkey everything's fine. I tried to set new MIME string with pet extension, even added handler for saving pet files but there's no difference. Just wondering if you could shed some light on this.Thanx for the squash!

Hi Griot. Yes, this has always been a problem with Opera. I gave up trying to find a solution. Maybe Opera deliberately analyzes content as a security feature and identifies .pet as .gz file content.

I never thought it was a major problem because it is so easy to change the file extension when the download dialog appears. Alternatively the file extension can be changed after download.
