Productivity enHanced And Tuned

Download PHATSlacko-5.5.02-ORIGINAL.iso @ a whopping 409MB.

Everything else is there, such as kernel source, md5, devx etc, plus kernel files if you want to woof up a slacko with k3.8.5-PAE. (Don't worry, non-PAE will be in ThinSlacko... soon).

PHATSlacko - 5.5 is FATSlacko renamed and updated, so not to confuse with FatDog. This puplet is designed to enhance your productivity at
work or at home. It's based directly on Slacko 5.5

Minimum System Requirements
A pentium i686 class processor, with the PAE instruction, 2GHz single core, 1 GHz dual core, 1 GB RAM, preferably with swap.
No, it's not for old machines. It is designed for production. It runs well on a USB stick, using f2fs (aka Flash Friendly File System).

Features

LibreOffice 4.0.1 - full office suite, mimetypes and all included, click a word document it opens in Writer. presentations work too.
Samba 4.0 - for serving your files accross the network with the SMB (MS) protocol.
VLC 2.0.5 - default for watching DVD's and videos. Poke in a DVD, click the icon when it appears, VLC starts playing the DVD.
Audacious 3.3.4 - default for mp3's and CD's. Pmusic is still present of you prefer.
Kompozer - for HTML editing, right click any HTML file and you get the option to "open with" Kompozer.
Transmission 2.77 - latest version, with GTK+3 libraries, also required by Audacious.
JRE 1.7Update17 - no browser plugin enabled, more later on that.
Ipscan 0.3 - Angry IP Scanner, uses Java.

Under the hood

all new 3.8.2 PAE kernel with f2sf (flash friendly filesystem), btrfs and HFS support. HFS and btrfs work in Gparted.
As of now f2fs is unsupported in Gparted, however all necessary tools are included to make a bootable USB with f2fs (manually).
It's mostly Barry's DOT config with the softmac broadcom drivers added and the aforementioned filesystems.
"A drive" technology developed by jemimah with an idea from tazoc and updated by mavrothal.
The A drive is an sfs residing on the CD (in the iso image). You can update it or roll your own. It must be named the same
as the original.
It's labeled "SCSI" but I don't think there are many scsi drivers in there.
jre is built with a script from jpeps, thanks for that.

Known Issues
Sfs are good but PPM is unaware of the libraries in an sfs. There fore you may end up getting deps you don't want or need. If you aren't sure ask! That's why we have the forum. Thanks to tazoc for reminding us of that.

Future verions of PHATSlacko will only ship as deltas until such time a kernel upgrade is deemed necessary. This way, we can preserve bandwith.

There is a bug with LibreOffice Writer not opening on the desktop icon click.
Fix:

Yeah this is mighty fine! ATM I'm uploading the PHATSlacko iso to my host site (at Godaddy) and I'm listening to a live music broadcast (and it's only interrupted slightly). If it's okay, I got a good md5sum -- so if you think it's alright (...I only use 2% of my allotted bandwidth now) then here are two files presently available. If you don't roll this way, tell me and I'll remove them and edit this posting.

I did a frugal install to the hard drive with the universal installer.
I installed the proprietary nvidia driver.

Running under KVM (FATDOG). Its very fast, smooth, and stable in a 768MB client. Reports below,

I PHATtened it up a little more and did a remaster,then did a frugal
install of the remaster on an 8gb SDHC card that has 5 other remasters
on it.
Everything is working good other than the vlc pvr but that was also a
problem in an earlier pup with this kernel that Barry made.
Anyways, thanks for PHATslacko, when f2fs gets easier to use I'd like to
try out installing this remaster to a SDHC formatted that way, ext4 is working
well though.

Quick run live pfix=ram. As expected everything working good out of the box. Except......... won't detect or mount a usb flash drive.Kernel "sees" it but no icon or detection by Pmount.
No problem in the 3.7x kernels (and back) but all of the 3.8x kernels exhibit the same behavior.

Testing is fun.......
Still running PHATSlacko on the Athlon XP box..... no apparent problem except for the usb flash drives.Tried to run on a newer quad-core box..... got to the desktop, correctly detected and mounted a flash drive (and unmounted) then froze upmoments later.Hard poweroff.Tried a second time.....same result.
Md5 was verified as well as the burn itself.

I cannot duplicate this. I tried an assortment of flash drives and they were all detected correctly.

starts and configures ootb, no problems experienced with usb sticks

runs cooler than 533

looks really good

[edit - for info only - audacious first run ok but crashes when trying to load extra files
transmission closes when trying to open file]

Figured if I kept trying different hardware PHATSlacko would eventually work...

Live pfix=ram on an old P4 box..... Xubuntu, Debian Testing and Debian Sid. Everything working including flash drive detection.

Well Mick,

You really don't have to change the name. Discerning user will immediately see that FATSlacko is a "fatter" version of Slacko and has nothing to do with Fatdog, FatWary or iFat

That being the case, this release is good one and would meet people who want everything out of the box without adding pets or sfs

So....I downloaded it....made a bootable DVD 'cause I could not get LinuxLive to create a bootable USB.

Once I got it booted, it reocgnized all my gear, I used the universal intaller to make a bootable USB.

So now, with rumpled trench coat I see that the adrive.sfs was NOT placed on the USB drive. Is that normal? I copied it from the DVD to the USB and rebooted and it appears that it's detected by the boot manager.

So...and remember, I am as technical as a box of rocks, can I add stuff to the Adrive.sfs? Am I correct in my SWAG that it would be a place to have things that I normally might add via the boot manager.

I have no pride, give me the RTFM url and I'll try to overcome my lack of understanding of adrive.sfs

And, as always, Slacko works very well.....thanks for all your efforts.

01micko, I realize that PAE is very fashionable in Puppy-Land right now, but of the four computers in my house that get regular use, two are Pentium M systems that will never ever ever work with PAE. So this Puplet isn't terribly useful to me.

Could you do me a BIG favor, and make a non-PAE version for us poor peasantfolk who are stuck with tech that's a decade-plus behind the curve? TBH I'd do it myself, but I've never compiled a kernel, AND I have a habit of causing make to do some very interesting things that do not result in functioning binaries later on... it's quite spectacular, actually

(There's also stuff in there that I'll never use, but I can quite likely use sc0ttman's Woofy tool to remove that... or just do a remaster the old-fashioned way

That is something I *do* know I can handle!)

I am NOT speaking for 01Micko who has shared that he's off to school this semester, I think, starting today.

But, if this helps, you might want to review. In the Slacko 5.5, thread, one Puppy member shared that he installed the same packages (or similar) right from the PPM. Then he remaster also as a POC (I think).

You might want to review that post. And the "....4G.iso" will work fabulously with the Pentium M you refer. In fact, Somewhere 01Micko and others also have tested using similar hardware that you have.

I only offer this as something that may help in the meantime because there has been some discussion on the I-net about use of later model kernels on older hardware.

Even after using the nifty custom desktop template icon save function....upon reboot I get the un customed hodge-podge of icons.

I could add the desktop template to the startup folder....but that seems a bit too much of a kludge even for me.

is there something I can to start up that will issue the apply command on bootup so I don;t have to do it manually?

Thanks, gc! *This* is helpful. Just three questions -- can you link me to the thread you're talking about, what's a 'POC', and where is this "...4G.iso" you speak of?

...as a further note...

Just because there are a lot of people with fancy new tech that blows away literally everything in my house in terms of sheer horsepower and performance (heck, an i3 could probably do that with ease...) doesn't mean that the old tech goes away. On the contrary, a lot of poor people get "trashware" ("I don't want this anymore, so I'll give it to someone who has nothing because it's marginally better than what they have.") -- what my grandmother would've called "Lady Bountiful being kind to the peasants".

Old tech is just as important as new tech. We WANT Puppy to run on old heaps found in the trash, because there are a lot of people in this world who have a choice between that or nothing at all. Until a new computer costs as much as a cheap printer at Wal*Mart, and is available in the same place... we've got to work with the older systems.
