Hi Everyone,
I am new to Puppy Linux, and so far it's been simply amazing.
However, I am still trying to grasp how Puppy manages software.
My understanding is that the latest Puppy Linux (5.3.x) is built from the binaries of different distros (Ubuntu, Slackware, Debian, etc.).
My question is, if I am running Slacko 5.3.x, could I still download and use a binary package from the Ubuntu repositories? Or would I have to use the Lucid Puppy?
Thanks for the help!

What Binary Packages is Puppy Linux Compatible With
hi stvnx
ubuntu packages will install in slacko, but not all of them will work. some will though, so you'll just have to experiment. note that some ubuntu packages may actually mess up slacko.
if you have some packages in mind, post there names as there may already be a compatible package for you

Hi stvnx7,
Welcome to the kennels ; -)
Puppy is built (usually with Woof) based on one particular distro (this is usually down to the lead developers)-
With Lucid Puppy 5.2x this was Ubuntu Lucid,
With Slacko Puppy 5.3x this is Slackware.

Okay, what about installing new software. the first thing to do is search for a naive PET or SFS package - using the PPM or the internet.
If this turns up a blank the repository search in the PPM can be extended to include (in Slacko case) the slackware repository - most slackware packages will work.
As a general rule the simpler a software package the more likely is to be compatible from slackware or another version of Puppy.

Also, there is Pussy Linux which is closely based on Debian.

Hi guys,
Thanks for both of your replies.
So it seems that using Ubuntu binary packages could be a mistake, and I should stick with Slackware packages for Slacko.
I didn't know how to activate the Slackware repos in PPM before, but I just figured it out and will do it when I get home.
I'm guessing it's also OK to use the binary packages for Slackware 13.37 (since that's what Slacko 5.3.3 is based on) located here: http://slackbuilds.org/
Thanks for helping to answer these questions. Sorry if I am asking redundant questions, just trying to read / learn / ask in order to get a grasp on things.

Yup, it should work - but may need extra libraries. No question too small/big ; -)
though its best to search first of course
