how to quickly empty a folder?

#1 Post by frefel »

PL 5.2 frugal on usb; FF 8.0

Seemingly overnite my savefile went from 25M to 2M free and on came the flashing warning to resize (AGAIN). This is despite my very restrictive FF settings. So I decided to delete Cache data (despite warnings re: that in a previous post) as it was huge. The problem: I opened the .mozilla/firefox/......default/Cache folder and started deleting one by one and 15 minutes later my finger is sore and I am still not finished.

How can I ¨batch¨ delete the folder contents so as to not have to deal with each file individually?

By the way, in those 15 minutes and after rebooting I freed 440M new space and FF runs fine.

Have you tried running a Select All (Files) on the files in the folder, if you're trying to delete all of the files in that folder?

I don't know what file manager Puppy 5.2 uses, offhand, but you can always try clicking on one of the files within the folder, and see if pressing Ctrl-A highlights all of the files at once. Or, you might be able to pick Select All through the right-click context menu.
Once you have all of the files selected, you can delete them all at once.

(...of course, use this with caution...)

In Rox, there is a 'Select' icon on its toolbar. Clicking it will highlight everything in the current directory. Now you can right click and select 'delete' and watch the universe collapse in on itself. Probably.

Also you can can left click and draw rectangle around files which selects files inside it. Then that right click and delete....

Ctrl-A will select everything in the directory. :) Or you can left-click the mouse and drag to select. (Start with the cursor in a neutral area, not resting on a file icon.)

After selecting the files and/or folders you want to delete, right-click and select Delete from the menu that opens.

Thanks everyone but the problem isn´t how to select all the files because once all are selected > Delete brings up each file individually and asks if I want to delete it, then I have to respond Yes and on to the next, one by one.

There are literally hundreds of files to click thru and it takes minutes to delete just a meg.

If you click 'Quiet' button instead of 'Yes' all files will be deleted at once.

Yes, SFR is right. 8)

But this doesn't work on copying files. On every existing file you have to click yes or press enter.

This special feature of puppy has made me always more angry than any missed lib or any other issue getting a program to work in puppy.

I do run into it on every day i use LazY Puppy...

I usually drag file or folder, to trash.
Right click trash, empty trash, delete.

Should have mentioned:

I only use full installs and don't have the save file and
delete problems that are common with frugal installs.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

You can set up FireFox to automatically delete the cache when it is closed ... http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/How%20to%20clear%20the%20cache

There is a deletable file in Firefox “urlclassifier3.sqlite

maybe 2 cents worth:

In a browser there is
Edit Preferences Advanced Cache
1 button to clear cache

quickly empty any folder:
open a virtual console and change to that directory.
cd <directory>
rm -rf *

Just tried in Classic Puppy 2.12X-TOP10

Selected 3 files with Ctrl-LeftClick

Left-Clicked them, dragged to another folder, and chose Copy

All 3 were copied.

I think that only applies to SeaMonkey. Frefel is using Firefox.

What I do in SeaMonkey is go to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Cache and change the location of the Cache to /tmp, so the cache is not saved when I shut Puppy down. That way SeaMonkey starts with an empty cache when I reboot. I don't know if there is a way to tell Firefox to put its cache in /tmp. I think that question has been raised and answered in another thread some time ago. I couldn't tell you which thread though. :(

I think RSH's point is to overwrite existing files without "one-by-one-querying".
I don't know how it works in 2.12X; in recent Puppies there's no option for "batch overwrite" in ROX, unfortunately...

@RSH:
I posted a makeshift copy tool yesterday, that might partially solve that problem.
By default there's asking for overwrite enabled, but it's easy to override this:
/usr/local/MultiCopyPaste/multipaste line 31:

Code: Select all

    echo -e "cp -ri """$SOURCES" """$DESTINATIONS"" >> /tmp/multicopy_exec
modified to:

Code: Select all

    echo -e "cp -r """$SOURCES" """$DESTINATIONS"" >> /tmp/multicopy_exec
and it won't ask for overwrite anymore (which is dangerous of course 8) ).

Greetings!

maybe I'm missing something?

In firefox:
tools ---> clear recent history ---> make sure "cache" is ticked --> "clear now"
also you can set the settings to only keep a small cache
preferences --> advanced --> network --> offline storage
also:
I suggest installing adblock plus and especially flashblock. Its flash media buffering into your cache that often does this.

also:
preferences --> advanced --> update --> uncheck the autoupdate
features.
otherwise firefox will auto download new versions of itself and any plugins without your permission, potentially cutting into your save file. You can still download this stuff manually under
help --> check for updates

I presume if you want to batch delete you are referring to a shell script which can be run every time you want to clear a specific directory?

For example if there is a directory, eg:

.mozilla/firefox/......default/Cache/ you want cleared, a small shell script would do it [ replace .mozilla/firefox/......default/Cache/ with whatever is the actual full path]. Here is an example script:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
rm  -rf    .mozilla/firefox/......default/Cache/*
Save those lines to a file and make it executable with chmod +x <filename>
NB the trailing /* is important otherwise the rm command will remove also the Cache directory not just the files in it. Of course as stated in this thread and elsewhere Firefox and other browsers can be configured to clear the cache on exit or even just use a memory cache or none at all.
