Driving a HP WL220 wireless card

#1 Post by RHubert787 »

Hi, I have this older pentium 4 hp compaq computer with 256 Mb RAM. I'm setting it up for my sister who only uses the web, so i decided to run "Browser linux" (90 Mb).

I'm having some trouble setting up the wireless card. It's in a PCI slot. it is an HP WL220. BrowserLinux does come equipt with NDIS WRAPPER, but NDIS WRAPPER needs a .inf file to run.

The driver can be found here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Te ... 242-101390

the file downloads as a .exe file.(in Windows)

the wireless card is an HP WL220 802.11b

Thanks for any suggestions!

RHubert787, ndiswrapper is a kludgey workaround for when there's no native Linux driver available. It gives wifi hardware vendors a too-convenient excuse not to provide proper Linux support.
So let's check whether there's a proper Linux driver available; Google tells me that your HP WL220 contains the Texas Instruments ACX100 chipset.

Now we need to know what kernel version Browserlinux is using. Puppy-derivative authors are notorious for not revealing such important technical information, so run this simple command -

Code: Select all

uname -r
Hopefully you will see "2.6.33.2" reported, which is the Puppy v5.1/5.2 kernel, and if so, you can use the acx-mac80211 driver I provided here -

Hi tempestuous, the kernal is 2.6.33.2!

I downloaded the acx-mac80211 to a usbdrive from my windows laptop and ran it on the linux pc. It installed but linux still did not detect the card.

OK, then we need to identify your exact device ID. Please run this command -

Code: Select all

lspci -n
and report the results.

Do this instead -

Code: Select all

completely blank.
To be honest I hope the card works. I am just assuming it does because everything else works great, ie. the motherboard, RAM, and CD-Drive. It also doesn''t help that I am completely new to linux and have no ideas for troubleshooting myself. Thanks.

Mmm, it illustrates the sometimes shaky technical foundations of some of these Puppy derivatives.

EDIT: libpci dotpet removed to avoid newbie confusion.

That's promising; your wifi card's device ID of 104c:8400 is seen by Puppy, and this device ID is definitely compatible with the acx-mac80211 driver. Are you sure that when you run the Network Wizard, a wifi interface is not listed?

The best troubleshooting would be to run this command -

Code: Select all

dmesg
and report anything relating to how the acx-mac80211 driver loaded.

After installing the acx-mac80211:

The following package has been successfully installed:
PACKAGE: acx-20100816-k2.6.33.2 CATEGORY: none
...note, this package does not have a menu entry

The network wizard still only reads eth0, the motherboard Ethernet port.

dmesg returned this:

I've repeated these steps on two different versions of BrowserLinux, the results you see are from the the most recent version. The older version had similar results but was not able to copy the dmesg results from the terminal(i've tried every method i could find on the web)

It occurs to me that you might be running "dmesg" just after you installed the acx-mac80211 dotpet, without a reboot in between?
If so, there's no chance that the new driver will automatically load, since Puppy needs to do an autodetect sequence during bootup with the new driver already installed.

But no matter, in a first-boot environment, all you need to do is manually load the freshly installed driver, as such -

Code: Select all

modprobe acx-mac80211
Now check "dmesg" to see how it loaded - the relevant section should be right at the end, and report any errors.
But if no errors, go ahead and check the Network Wizard.
If you still can't see a new interface in the Network Wizard, it's feasible the wifi interface may be "down". Run this command, which will reveal all interfaces, regardless of their state -

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a

After modprobe acx-mac82011 the wireless card is still not read by the network wizard. Only eth0 appears.

The driver failed to load.

EDIT: updated acx-mac80211 driver also failed.

The BIOS does not have a PNP option.

rmmod produced an error.(I assumed thats fine, assuming that the old driver did not exist in RAM. BTW i am running on a live cd. The computer has no HDD)

#modprobe acx-mac80211
WARNING: Deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong into /etc/modprobe.d/.

dmesg provided an identical result:
acx: acx: eCPU is already running. reset_dev() FAILED
acx_pci 0000:05:04.0: PCI INT A disabled
acx_pci: probe of 0000:05:04.0 failed with error -5

I am beginning to assume that maybe the card is broken, like I said, I just came across this computer and have not tested the wireless card. I would try it in another computer to test it's functionality, except I use a laptop. I might have to go out and pick up a $10 802.11 card.

The acx-mac80211 driver is somewhat cutting-edge, so your wifi device is not necessarily faulty.

Here is the old "acx" driver which you can try instead.

EDIT: the old acx driver proved successful in this particular case.

OK, I just posted the older driver in the "Extras for Puppy 5.1" thread, along with the acx-mac80211 driver, so users can easily find both versions.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 985#443985

Just be aware that the older acx driver only supports WEP encryption, not WPA encryption.
