Playing music files in WMA format
can't play wmv files
I'm having a similar problem with Gxine. When I try to play a wmv file, I get the message:
"Error loading library: wmvdmod.dll"
Sometimes the sound works but no video.
I've installed the xine_extra_codes-1, and more_codecs packages.
I'm including my codecs.txt file which I got by using the instructions above.
I'm running Puppy 1.0.9CE which I upgraded frrom 1.0.8.
I don't have Windows so I can't rename my pup001 file, as suggested above.
Any tips on how to get my gxine working with wmv?
Thanks,
ApeMan

1) I think when you run Puppy from CD, you get a startmenu, that allows to boot to Ram without using Pup001.
Then you could rename pupp01.
-------------------------
2) You also yould make a copy of pup001 while Puppy runs.
Important: run "sync" in a consolewindow, so that all changes are written from Ram to harddisk.
And then delete pup001, then turn of the computer without shutting Puppy down (hard-reset).
This is not recommended, but should work.
But 1) would be better.

Renaming/Copying a pup001 file
ApeMan,
The biggest problem with trying to copy or rename a pup001 file is that it can't/shouldn't be mounted when you are working with it. I'm not totally sure from your description but I will assume that you are running Puppy from the live CD with a pup001 save file somewhere on your hard drive. Your first order of business in this case is to boot up Puppy running in option 4 - Run totally in RAM - you will have to go thru the steps of configuring your keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc each time you boot this way as nothing is saved. Begin by clicking on the "Drives" icon on the desktop to bring up MUT - you should see a list of drives/partitions on the computer with a box beside each one that says "Mount" - click this box for each drive in turn and look for a file called "pup001" in the box that comes up. It should be pretty easy to spot.
To Rename this file:
Right click on the file and in the menu that comes up you should find an option to rename it - click on this option and in the resulting dialog box that comes up you can rename the file - I would suggest something like "pup001-backup" or whatever suits your fancy - save and/or enter as needed and close the various boxes and unmount the drive.
To Copy this file for backup purposes:
Once you find the file on a drive mount a second drive - another partition or a USB key is fine for this. Just check that the file system on the second drive can be written to - as long as it isn't NTFS and has sufficient room you shoud be OK. Do a simple drag and drop to copy pup001 to the new location. This will likely take a few minutes depending on the size of the file. You will then need to rename one of the files as described above.
When you are finished close all boxes and unmount all drives then go to start and select shutdown or reboot as needed.

playing wmv files with gxine
Thanks for the info. I was getting a little confused, so instead I just today did a complete re-install of Puppy 1.0.9CE from scratch. I tried to play wmv files, they still didn't work. Then I installed the xine_extra_codecs-1 PupGet package. And now it works just fine!
Thanks,
