Driver for 3CCFME656 B PCMCIA Card

#1 Post by Alex2006 »

Hi,
I'm new of Puppy.
I have installed Puppy Linux 2.16 on my old HP Omnibook 4150 (pentium II, 128 MB RAM; 5GB HD).

It works very well and I'm proud of it.
Now I must configure my network device.
I saw that drivers are no present. I tried to load drivers with auto and specified Load Module of the Wizard, but it is not right.

How can I do? Where can I find drivers of 3CCFME656 B (3 COM).
Can I use driver for WS NT? How?

Thanks

I don't Know that the "B" is a winModem... I know that the one w/o the "B" is in fact a software modem as I have one. If it is a Win Modem [software modem] then you aint using that one to my knowledge except with win...You know the win in winModem!!
The closest that I have to 2.16 is 214r x1[thru5], and they all find any Hardware pcmcia cards... Leaving me perplexed.
That is a fairly old lappy. I would check that the pcmcia in Bios is set to cardbus, as sometimes this is changeable, and the default is something like OS Selected or some such as opposed to Cardbus... That's all I've got just now...

You should be able to get at least Puppy Linux 4.3.1 with the older kernel working on your Omnibook. Look for it in the downloads under SpecialPuppy. 4.3.1 may give you better range of drivers. I would install that first.

When I was looking for Linux-compatible PCMCIA cards, I consulted http://tuxmobil.org/pcmcia_linux.html

According to that website, 3CCFEM556B is Linux-compatible.

racepres is right in suggesting that you look in your BIOS for anything about the setting for PCMCIA. With my Toshiba Satellite 2065CDS, the setting had to be changed from Autodetect to 16-bit/Cardbus.

That 3com is a winmodem.

5.2 will run on the Omnibook.

I'm guessing that Alex2006 has made a slight typo with the model number, and it should be 3CCFEM656 (B).
This is an ethernet LAN card, not a winmodem. This card is nothing new, and should be supported in all Puppies by the 3c59x kernel module.

Alex2006, if Puppy is failing to autodetect this device, you need to check that the PCMCIA interface can properly recognise your card. Please run these commands -

Code: Select all

pccardctl status
pccardctl ident
If you cannot see your device listed, reset the PCMCIA interface like this -

Code: Select all

pccardctl eject
pccardctl insert
Now run the status/ident commands again. If still no device reported, you might need to restart the underlying PCMCIA system, like this -

Code: Select all

pcmcia-socket-startup
