I installed the Frozen Bubble .pet but nothing happens

#1 Post by AF Branden »

I just installed frozen-bubble-2.2.0-i686-1as.pet and it said it was missing
a library, SDL_Pango-0.1.2-i486.pet. Well, I installed the missing library but now when I click the menu entry nothing happens and I don't even get an error. Any Ideas on what to do next?

I heard somewhere else on the forum(can't remember where) that it has an issue with the newer perl version and needs an older version of perl to work. Know anything about this? Edit: found the post where this is mentioned but there is no solution: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 1&start=45

This is the frozen bubble .pet
frozen-bubble-2.2.0-i686-1as.pet

I don't know how much this will help but in my experience I have found that when nothing happens something the program needs is not in the system. Have you checked the dependancies in the package manager? Does the game require openGL or something like that? It just might.

Edit* Did some checking. It looks like you need SDL.

I already had both SDL and OpenGl installed and working. All of my other
3d accelerated games work perfectly and I now have all dependencies; hence the reason I only had 1 missing lib. I use Puppy for heavy gaming so most of the libs I already had. As you can see in my sig I have 768mb ram.

Normally I can get my games to work just by sheer determination alone but in this case im at a dead end.

The only thing I can think of is that I need an older perl version, but will downgrading perl effect any of my other programs or my system at all?

Not a top priority right now though, I found another game called S.C.O.U.R.G.E. thats really fun and I got addicted real quick hehe.

The only Puppy versions I have been able to get Frozen Bubble to work on are the versions based on Slackware.
Puppy 3.01 is one that I got Frozen Bubble to work on.

Ok, thanks for the help guys its probably not worth the trouble anyway. S.C.O.U.R.G.E is a roguelike similiar to nethack or Lost Labyrinth only it has amazing graphics, be warned though its a 143mb download.

Is Xbubble too minimal? It seems to me the gameplay is pretty similar.

Spent all day today trying to finally get this to work and made zero progress.

This is the error i'm getting:

# frozen-bubble
Can't locate Locale/gettext.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i486-t2-linux-gnu /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/i486-t2-linux-gnu /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /opt/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/i486-t2-linux-gnu /opt/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8 /opt/lib/perl5/vendor_perl .) at /usr/bin/frozen-bubble line 52.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/frozen-bubble line 52.
#

I installed the full version of perl 5.8.8 and gettext and now I get this error:

# frozen-bubble
/usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i486-t2-linux-gnu/auto/Locale/gettext/gettext.so: undefined symbol: Perl_Gthr_key_ptr
#

If any one knows what these errors mean or how to fix them let me know.

Sounds like you may have two versions of Perl on your system.
I installed the full version of perl 5.8.8 and gettext
What did you install from? Debs?

I'm trying to recreate your steps here to see if I can figure this out with you. Looks like a fun game. :)

I tried perl pets, debs, and rpms, (one at a time of course) and I deleted the old perl5 folder in /usr/lib/ along with the perl files in /usr/bin/ before trying them. Is there anything else I should remove? I also tried gettext Locale 1.05 rpms and debs which is when it gave the second error.

AF Branden et al..

I have frozen bubble running on spup

It didn't take too much.. just basically downloaded it from PPM and near all dependencies were taken care of.

There was one snag. It complained about libvga.so.1. I needed to make a symlink! That's it! Perhaps your problem is similar?
(of course I had proper video drivers installed, also available in spup PPM)

HTH

Cheers! (oh, and as a neat side effect I got extreme-tux-racer going too.. with sound!)

01micko, only one problem with that; I'm using 4.2.1 not spup. Any idea how to get it to work on 4.2.1? What version of puppy is spup based on?

Frozen Bubble & Greenstone problem

#17 Post by tico »

@AF Branden and @battleshooter,

I'm having the same problem with Greenstone (a digital library) and Perl, and I'm totally angry about that. For months I'm trying to mix different versions of Greenstone with different solutions to the Perl's version (I need Perl 5.8.9, so I tried to remove /lib and /usr/bin files from 5.10, I have compiled lots of Greenstone's sources and so on....). But until now, nothing...

As AF Branden said, how can we remove all files from Perl 5.10 install? By the way, is there a Perl 5.8.9 pet anywhere?

I'm using Lucid Puppy 5.10 in a clean frugal install. I'm trying to incorporate Greenstone to Puppy, as it is a free software supported by UNESCO and focused on schools and minorities. Puppy+frugal+Greenstone should be a perfect solution!
