Cool idea and an offer to fellow puppians...

#1 Post by starhawk »

I just had a really nifty idea. As I've posted in at least two places, my local computer shop (Tritech, here in Siler City, NC) has a number of old Dells that they "can't seem to get rid of". Us Puppians know better, now, don't we

At the same time, all of these old Dells are going to the landfill sooner or later, unless someone gets them and fixes 'em up. But somehow I doubt that there are many Puppians here in NC, let alone within an hour's drive of Siler City (Greensboro, Asheboro, Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill are within this limit).

So here's what little ol' me came up with. For the cost of shipping, I will pick up a random Dell from Tritech, load it up with a copy of Puppy of your choosing, and ship it off to you via United Parcel Service (UPS).

Again, all I'll ask you to pay is shipping. Be warned that this is not cheap for any desktop, and that it'll take me about a week to ship the computer once I've got it.

This is NOT spam (to me) but rather an offer to the community to help you folks out. If you need a spare box or have a friend in need of computer(s), I'll help you out.

Anyone who's interested can post here OR PM me OR click the "Email" link below this post to (duh) send me an email about it.

EDIT: thought it might be a good idea to post my inventory...

CURRENT INVENTORY:
- Dell L800r - P3 800MHz - 512MB RAM - 10GB HDD (1GB as swap)
- Dell L800CXE - P3[Celeron] 800MHz - 320MB RAM - 20GB HDD (1GB as swap)
- "Igor" [Custom] - Athlon XP 1800+ @ 900MHz - 196MB RAM - 10GB HDD

Not right now, but I've got 2 desktops... one's a Dimension L800r, not sure about the other. Also have a completely rebuilt Gateway (only orig. components are power supply & case).

I'm also working on a "prove it" box -- AMD K6 w/ 64mb RAM as a practical office machine. Runs pUPnGO, but I need to pull some libs from 412-retro to make it work... along with doing some editing of menus & defaults...

EDIT: 2nd dell is a Dimension L800CXE. Front panel connector was missing (wires were there, just not the connector housing) but a little electrical tape fixed that real quick.

I would love to take them but the shipping from us means i have to pay import duty and get import permit,
At the same time, all of these old Dells are going to the landfill sooner or later,
but because it maybe classified as trash, i may not get the permit anyway.

btw you can use them to build supercomputer...

I have no need of a supercomputer, but thanks for the tip  8)

Pity you'd have to pay duties... what country do you live in?
