Saving space is done by either removing large apps or reducing needed libs by others. Getting rid of Gnumeric/Goffice and making a sfs and pet for it for quickpet would save around 5MB compress give or take

IIRC Gnumeric has been discussed as a candidate for removal previously. I personally like using it, but I agree that it's one of the apps for which a move to the PPM wouldn't upset too many people.

I never said that abiword word should be removed, that would be stupid, I said to compile it statically without Goffice, you can compile Abiword without Goffice, only 2 apps use Goffice, Abiword and Gnumeric, If you toss gnumeric in the repo and compile abiword without goffice its a very large savings.

Having Gutenprint lib included which has hundreds of compressed ppd's inside of the libs is very bloated way of doing things, 2MB+ compressed, If you have a gui that downloads individual ppd's as needed per printer, The download will be around 10-50kb each. That's a blink of an eye download even on dialup. And a very innovative puppy way of doing things. Which puppy is known for.

Actually having all the ppd's online would be a brilliant Idea because alot of printers don't work out of the box anyways, because of outdated gutenprint or because of large other printer files that aren't included in gutenprint, etc depending how the gui is made it could download a printer update file which could update make and models, so it would be as easily as updating the repo's ppd files and finally putting a end to a very long standing problem of not being able to find the right ppd file for a lot of printers, The forum is plagued with hundreds of thread about this issue. This could solve it and make more people happy with there puppy based pc's

When compiling ghostscript you the option of it building all the ppd instead of just building the extra large lib. Those are the files that should be uploaded to the repo and included in the gui. Following the above 2 software recommendations would save around 10MB compressed or more.

Can you enlighten my ignorance?
I thought that Goffice is a stand alone office suite (kinda OOo) and gnumeric and Abiword also.
What is the use then to compile those latter two with goffice?

I confess I'm not up on modern programming techniques but is the essential idea that only the bits of Goffice that Abiword needs to function are included as part of the latter program? I can see how space would be saved in that case.

You're still assuming that everyone that might want to use Puppy has an internet connection. As it happened I did need to download a couple of files to get the HP Deskjet 720C to run on this machine, but for the Canon BJC-70 and the Canon i865 the drivers were included which saved messing about.

And a very innovative puppy way of doing things. Which puppy is known for.

As is being user friendly and having an attractive set of apps that are ready to go. You shouldn't lose sight of that. The main reason I decided to use Puppy instead of Ubuntu on my Pentium D machine was the I realised that it had virtually all of the apps I'd need.

Didn't report it but had this starting from 240.
I get errors when dragging files from one rox window to another, see picture.
This is the bad part.
The good part is, that astonishingly the copy did work ok as I can work with the files.

You know that's a text box which you can select all the text in and copy it and post the text instead of a image.

Running 242 at this moment and finding it very good. So far just the one problem
for me - as a hobby I like to use Lazarus for some simple programming. I have
done this in the past using Gposil's dpup, puppy 431 and lighthouse pup with
no problems, but luci throws up the following when I try to start laz:

I have tried using gposil's lazarus sfs and installing from scratch, both of which
work fine in 431 and lhp.
Programs written in Laz in 431 give runtime error 204 in luci.
As a further check I tried peazip portable 3.0 which is written in lazarus. Works
fine in 431 (haven't tried lhp yet), but gives the following in luci:

I was using that yesterday to partition my 80GB drive prior to doing a full install of Lupu 511. It probably is a decent candidate for moving to PPM, however, for newbie-proofing at least. How big is it?

Since 511 then from 238 thru 242 and Quickset 511--- video in pupTelly is choppy and out of sync with the audio and the same in Youtube.
Quirky 1.4 the video is the way it should be and completly in-sync with the audio. I use the same system for all versions with a SiS card. I run FProt AV in the 511 thru 242 and not on Quirky... that's the only difference I know of... could that be a problem... does anyone else experience this or am I alone?

UPDATE:
SOLVED MYSELF: Not realizing, I was using browser Seamonkey with Quirky and use Iron-6 with all the other puppies.... "I Suggest... stay away from Iron Browser" This little thing could be causing major problems with other programs.... just a thought!!!

I looked this up, If using cups 1.1.14 then yes and if using From CUPS 1.1.15 no, The earlier cups worked better on puppy anyways, and wouldn't be hard to update just the newer different ppd's.

But what I was thinking is using ghostscript ppd files in cups. cups as the loader or editing the ghostscript sources so it doesn't include the ppd's in the libgs.so and would dynamically load the ppd's from downloaded file.

CUPS up to 1.1.14 used its own filters, though the filtering system was based on Ghostscript. Namely the pstoraster was directly derived from Ghostscript code. CUPS had re-organized and streamlined the whole mechanics of this legacy code and organized it into a few clear and distinct modules. The CUPS pstoraster filter was working out-of the-box. It was working independently from any Ghostscript which might or might not have been installed on the system.

From CUPS 1.1.15 this has changed. CUPS now relies on a Ghostscript version, that needs a "cups" device (-sDEVICE=cups"). ESP Ghostscript 7.05 provides this. GNU Ghostscript needs a special patch to the source code and a re-compilation to work for CUPS. ESP Ghostscrpt therefor is the preferred distribution. In its version 7.05.4 it contains exactly 300 supported "devices" (compare this to stock GNU Ghostscript with 181 devices!).

Luci-243 with a clean frugal installation works great. Luci-241 with a frugal KDE installation updated perfectly to luci-243. Luci-241 with a full hd installation updated fine to luci-243, just had to reinstall some applications such as pwidgets. Sorry, no other problems to report using my hardware.

IMO zdrv should be retained and nonessential items such as docs placed there. When making manual frugal installations, users may need to be reminded that their are 4 necessary files since some have apparently deleted the zdrv.

With my hardware, there was one headache after another with earlier versions of CUPS. The printer problems have been solved and the current CUPS 1.4.3 works flawlessly. It would be a hugh mistake to roll back.

Jim it couldn't of been the version of cups, Cups is just a gui for ppd files, It could of been the backend driver version number, or how cups was compiled, we did have issues in the past with cups and permissions issues that was a large headache. But cups is really just a loader.
