Is Openbox more stable for more users?
why is it the default?
Users on IRC are saying JWM is faster . . .

JWM surely IS faster but it may have some bugs with fullscreen and doesn't handle window placement as good as openbox I guess. Openbox could be set not to animate iconify/restore maybe to speed it up a bit.

These tiny differences can
be very important to those with older hardware.

Sylvander mentioned that not all settings were saved during upgrade
I can confirm his report:
My firewall was off (when I had it turned on)
and there was no internet connection or sound after the upgrade
Also my JWM settings had returned to the default.

I tried opening 3 quickpets and installing 3 programs simultaneously
- ahem - do not try this at home.
One of the packages was the crystal ATI and I ended up with a black screen.

Working on some "Lobster proofing". It's a term Larry and myself often use in PMs. At the stage I have it now, you can't get a driver while other things are coming in with wget. Without running a daemon, I can't stop a user starting another download whilst they are downloading a video driver. I can put in a warning. Many people are aware that they can't run too much at once. I have successfully grabbed 4 or 5 pets at once without issue, excluding video drivers. I should also implement the same for sfs downloads, although the reboot is prompted, not automatic. Maybe I won't. I don't like to dumb down things too much. Puppies are pretty smart .

last version tested was 236 which was ok on sat box 1, nogo on dialup box2 (modem only).

239 fails on both with video, probe and select (intel 915(sat) and radeon (dialup)); start firewall on both (sanity check, could not find filter table); modem (agere winmodem); ethernet (10base1000).

will add details tomorrow as have just 16meg of sat left.

Well, I'm not surprised at all, as I already posted such issues for Luci 209.
Puppy needs the latest fixes.
By miracle, Luci 238 as finally a more recent ntfs-3g & Gparted.
Look at the change logs of PartedMagic and SystemRescueCD, they do know why upgrades are necessary.
Core upgrades are to be done and would save quite some hassle and maybe raise Puppy rank in distrowatch.

Nice to see you also Minnesota, I'm just here for a few days to lend a hand, My main focus is 2.14X and also the next Living water will be built on 2.14X, its 1/2 done now
I also think Gweled should be included, Its too large on 2.14X (around 3MB compressed) with all the extra gnome libs its needs, but Luci had them all included and well it makes it much smaller because of it.

So I guess they changed automatic thumbnail previews option.
You can right click eye icon in rox or turn on thumbnails in rox options under thumbnails tab.

I think it might be a good idea if 'turn on thumbnails' was made default setting.

The thumbnails are cached, which uses up disc space. If you're unaware of this, there's a possibility you could suddenly run out of space in your pupsave for no obvious reason.

I am trying that at the moment.

By "faster" I assume people mean, programs open faster.

The main reason for Openbox is that the latest gnome-mplayer and some other programs (including Stellarium as I recall, and maybe google Earth) do not do full screen properly on jwm

I hope they (users on IRC) feel that everyone who contributes to this forum, which is the place for Lucid development, gets listened to and considered. We need examples--right now I ma opening and closing programs over and over, trying to get a feel if jwm is truly faster and how that would balance out with the known issues. Thanks.

Apps opening instantaneously is IMHO a very good thing. Once upon a time I made Black Greyhound Ultra for that reason.

Menu -> Desktop Settings -> Openbox window manager config -> Appearance -> uncheck Animate iconify and restore

Right now, in Openbox, apps are opening snappily for me.

BTW, a second consideration in choosing Openbox was that it was getting more development and testing (because of being included in LXDE).

It also might be w2roth a try to change the Openbox theme to clearlooks. Desktop Setting -> GTK Theme Chooser *and* Openbox wm config

Clearlooks uses an engine rather than a pixbuf (image).

Over the months it has been about 50-50 for and against thumbnails on by default. This is a slightly interesting theoretical point maybe. The question is, should we always set default as the "lowest common denominator"? That would be thumbnails off.

A similar issue is with setting mplayer to use X11 or xv video by default. xv is best for everyone who can use it, but the nv video driver seems unable to use it. so X11 is the lowest common denominator. BUT, are people now going to use X11 because they do not know to make the change in Preferences? In that case, the large majority of Lucid users would *not* be getting the best video.

playdayz, take a look at /etc/fonts/local.conf in xorg_base and enable hinting. Fixes all font issues in Mozilla apps and I'm sure LCD/netbook users will find this awesome.

The 173.14.25 driver will.
Did some more digging and found that this video card is a Quadro FX330.

i'd vote yes, or at least an intitial boot option to do so, for random hardware users so it just works or at least works long enough to try and get it working. update the initial browser welcome to explain how to 'upgrade'.

Updating in general Just a thought

In my experience updating *any* Linux distro is a mess, no matter Ubuntu, Mandake, even Arch. I avoid updating whenever possible, but when I do it, I am happy if the result works at all and is not totally broken. Of course, we are going to try to do better than that when we have a Lucid 5.2 to update Lucid 5.1.1.
