tony wrote:Hi lguleder,

As gposil is no longer maintaining his dpup I checked out Squeeze 009 and dropped into debian dependency hell.

The puppy package manager put a lot of stuff into /root but could not find 3 or 4 libs and of course the programs would not work.

I think you are working on the problem with pdebthing and wish you luck. It's not easy to set up a new pup and there must be a lot of pressure of the sort that drove off gposil.

Regards Tony
Newby here. I haven't been on a forum in 10 years. Been with linux since redhat 9 and puppy for the last couple of years.

I agree with dependency hell. However, I found them all at debian lib site. Right now have a couple of packages that don't work I downloaded from default puppy squeeze repository.

One in particular was the long awaited VLC 1.1.x version. Now please help me understand that with no missing dependencies why VLC doesn't work. When I try to start it in terminal it states it can't be run in root.. Help me understand why a puppy squeeze009 repository would have a package not design to run at root. It indeed runs from user spot but that is worthless if it can't be set as default multimedia player. Am I missing something here?

For all who contribute their time, skills and talents to putting out these excellent puppy derivatives, I thank profusely.

Any insight into my dilema would be most appreciated.

The reason why that happens is because the developer who added the VLC package took the easier Debian way out, I've compiled VLC a few times and let me tell you its not fun, around 50 packages it took for 0.86h and lots of troubleshooting, now I think its easier but you have to enable root user while configuring the sources, but being that this package was taken from the Debian repo it wouldn't of been configured for puppy root user, probably a spot script could easily be built for vlc and added to the package.

Great news!

Just let me know if you want to take over the Debian Puppy efforts :)

My army duty is supposed to start in about one month and I want two weeks to rest, spend time with people I love and get ready. I also need a break from work with puplets and puppies. :)

I really hope a "final" release will be here in the next two weeks. At the moment I wait for Barry to upload the Woof used to build the final Wary. I'll do my best to upload all the cool extras we have in Squeeze so the Lupu guys and people who want to continue or fork this won't have too many problems.

And gposil, you know ... you're the chosen one

It's alright, I told them I have no intentions to harm people. I want to protect my people, people I love and my homeland. But not at all costs

I belong to the Jewish nation, but I also belong to the human race. My brothers and sisters across the cursed wall also have feelings, dreams and human rights. Some may hate me for this ... but I put my humanity and compassion above everything else.

Good to see the new Wary, it means a stable Woof is closer. I made a nice todo list in xpad (see? good to have it there, very handy ) and I want to make a new testing build, but this time I want to use a zdrv and add some third-party stuff.

Iguleder, you mentioned living in the desert. I spent 4 months as a volunteer worker at Ein Gedi Kibbutz way back in 73 just after Yom Kippur War. You anywhere near there? Lot of great people there, climbed a lot of date palms and learned to like yogurt. :D LOL Take care man.

Iguleder, I wouldn't like to be in your shoes. Hope that you take the correct decision in the crucial moments. Take care, you still have a mission to accomplish afterwords in KDE

The problem, historically, (across the world) has not been the average person but instead the minority of lunatic radicals who enslave and manipulate them.

Profound examples are mass-murder by and/or in China, Japan, Germany (WWI & WW II), Cambodia, much of Africa, and the USSR, and additional war-mongering population-oppressing governments in Iran, N. Korea, etc.

If people of every nation would control their leaders we'd not have to deal with terrorism and war.

Since Israel is surrounded by implacable enemies who have been - for generations - committed to the annihilation of the nation-state and all of the Jewish citizens there is little option but to defend or die.

I don't envy you your geo-political location or your cultural history as the scapegoat of madmen and tyrants.

Be well.
