Can confirm this problem in Quirky 1.2 but with normal kernel.

I cannot duplicate this problem. Which tool are you using - the universal installer or the bootflash installer?

With what filesystem is the drive initially formatted? How is the installer formatting it?

Using Universal Installer, makes no difference how I format the target drive, ext2/3, it always identifies it as ext4 and always fails to install extlinux.sys.

I have no problems.
Maybe you have a memory error.
Run a memory test.
Altho you don't specify how much memory you have.

Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Are you seeing this with more than one flash drive?
At what point does the installer tell you that the drive is ext4?

I just ran this again for verification. Drive is in fact formatted to ext2 and is a different drive to that tried before.

I could not verify this with either quirky1.2 or qret1.2. Both were fresh frugal installs and I tested several machines.

Try booting off the Live CD and see if you can duplicate the problem.

This has been reported by several users, including me. It is specific to certain machines, which otherwise run fine.

FWIW I just ran the process in 4.3* on the same machine with no problems. I will have to buy some cds tomorrow and try your suggestion.
BTW, knowing your affinity with printing issues, I came across this earlier

What does the "blkid" command tell you about the filesystem on the flash drive?

So no possible reason to find and thus no cure for it?
I remember having had such a situation also an no way to get it corrected, well only by recreating a new save file (it was in a frugal install)

Barry, if you haven't seen this thread, you should check it out. Patriot has figured out a way to cleanly unmount the save file and the partition that hosts the save file.

Also gyro is also doing some interesting things with the init script as well.

Anyone feel a sense of Déjà vu?

Disktype broken
Disktype now working

Could that old problem be related to the new one?

(ref jemimah's above)
Second that, a few times already I've had to use a bkp-copy of the qrky savefile when things went awry on a reboot or after a poweroff (q112's savefile wasn't even copy-able, so my hunch is it wasn't cleanly unmounted, perhaps?). The mods are a bit deep for my limited skillset, though..

Other than that, the q series looks better all the time :)

It sure sounds like the problem, except that it doesn't happen for me.

OK. I finally saw it happen.

1. With qret 1.2 and a 256MB flash drive formatted as ext3, disktype identified it correctly.

2. With qret 1.2 and a 1GB flash drive formatted as ext3, disktype reported it as ext4.

3. With quirky 1.2, both drives were identified correctly.

I am using Qret 1.2, various usb drives all above 4GB. Dont forget biggest problem was that extlinux.sys was not created, though extlinux.conf was. Thus, boot not possible, (missing operating system error).
