Kentucky politics in the news Oh no
Kentucky politics in the news Oh no
I'm proud to be a native Kentuckian. With Rand Paul making the news, Kentucky is going to be fair game for ridicule yet again. Politics are different in Kentucky. Having lived in other parts of the country, I would say we are more politically aware. We will elect a crook as long as we know he/she is not going to surprise us. We would rather the crooks pay the politicians than the taxpayers, as long as it all stays within reason. We will elect someone for the entertainment factor and we will vote to spite the rest of the country. We know one senator isn't all that powerful. Rand Paul would be so closely watched I don't think he could get away with much.
I have a feeling the consensus view on election day may be, we are going down, we might as well do it with a bang. I doubt I'll vote for him. I'm a yellow dog Democrat. I sure do wish that yellow dog was running for election.

Bugman, there you go. He's not sneaking around doing dirty things. He's getting everybody riled up. Unfortunately calm and reasonable discussion rarely gets anything done. If you want your neighbor to keep his chickens out of your garden put a fox in his henhouse. He'll build a proper fence then.
Coal mining is a whole different can of worms. It is dangerous by nature. It does pay well but, you don't see a lot of cheap labor lining up for those jobs. Just take my word for it, most coal miners and their families live a better life than you think they do. They have many things society by and large gave up long ago.

Bugman: It is actually frightening that someone with views like that can even be taken seriously but then again George Bush was elected and re-elected. Can anyone blame the rest of the world for hating and ridiculing the U.S.A.?
Things are not what they appear to be: nor are they otherwise.

More controversial Rand Paul comments could affect GOP Unity Rally with Senator Mitch McConnell, Trey Grayson

An old friend went to grad school in Kentucky. and described a local sheriff's campaign for reelection against a "reform" ticket. His campaign was simple":"Ya'll know me! Ah been yore Sheriff for nigh on twenny years now! Ah already stole everything ah want! You let them new guys in, they gonna be in there grabbin' with both hands!"obxjerry wrote:I'm proud to be a native Kentuckian. He was re-elected in a landslide.

Kentucky has 120 counties. Many have populations of less than 10,000, some closer to 2,000. There isn't a lot of money to pay elected officials. It is accepted that office holders are compensated in ways other than their salary. It works. In the smaller counties everybody knows each other. Since in Kentucky we know our fifth cousins and our spouses fifth cousins, most people are claimed as kin. When you put it in that context you can see political speeches are different here.
My uncle was sheriff or county judge for decades. You couldn't serve 2 consecutive terms so, he and another man swapped off. I knew another sheriff well that among other things was a country butcher. I'd bring him a beef or a deer in quarters and he would chill it out and cut it up. County judge wasn't so bad but I wouldn't be a sheriff. It's not an easy job. You're always on call and you have to do things you really don't want to do. You do see people in their worse circumstances.

Actually Ron Paul didn't write that stuff. That's just bugman playing the usual political smear game. If you want to see what Ron Paul thinks, just google for articles actually written by him. It's not like he's reticent about any issue at all. In fact, you can't shut the guy up.Bugman: It is actually frightening that someone with views like that can even be taken seriously but then again George Bush was elected and re-elected. And contrary to reports in our ever-accurate media, Rand Paul is not a clone of Ron.
The solution to this problem is not taking the Ministry of Propaganda, er, I mean, the "Mainstream Media" seriously. The political establishment really don't want another guy in Congress asking how bill x is allowed in the Constitution. Messes up their facade of legitimacy. With Rand Paul making the news, Kentucky is going to be fair game for ridicule yet again.
Will Grigg has an interesting take on the supposed Paul racism:

actually, i already know what you think of free speech, and what some other libertarians think of free speech
in the free state wyoming forum, a thread on gay rights was locked by the forum founder, who apparently doesn't think much of it [gay rights or free speech]
i'll give you credit though paul, you were on the side of right in this one . . .

For what it's worth I like bugman a lot. Not only does he think, he encourages everyone else to think also. That's a polar opposite to believers that encourage others to believe.
Front page of the Louisville paper says Rand Paul is 6 points ahead in a poll. In the story it also says he's 4 points ahead in another poll and 25 points ahead in a Rasmussen poll. Of course there have been politicians that complained they passed out more half-pints of whiskey to buy votes than votes they actually got. Voters are fickle....and stupid. Look at all the people that have turned on Obama over this BP spill. I hope he has the political capital to to take BP to the woodshed as he would like.

well, ayn rand paul has gotten results:
and:
[i'm not laughing at kentucky, just one of its citizens]Reeling after comments made by U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul, the Kentucky State Legislature has taken steps to reduce its embarrassment. It has adopted a resolution which declares that any form of discrimination is inconsistent with American values.
Louisville Democratic Sen. Gerald Neal introduced the resolution last Friday during a special session on the state budget. It was adopted without objection in the predominantly Republican chamber. Neal said that Paul's extreme beliefs have made Kentucky "a laughing stock."
and:
i can only gather, that despite their tiresome superiority complex, that libertarians are as confused [and confusing] as the followers of every other political party in amerikaThe vice chairman of the Libertarian Party of Kentucky said last week that he strongly condemns the views of GOP candidate Rand Paul and suggested that the conservative group may run a competing candidate in the state’s upcoming Senatorial election.
Joshua Koch said that Paul—son of former Libertarian presidential candidate Ron Paul— boasts views that drastically differ from the fiscal conservative party’s ideology, including his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage, The Associated Press (AP) reports. Koch also took issue with Paul’s criticism of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
"The reason why we would even consider running somebody in this race is because we’re not going to let Rand determine what a Libertarian stands for," he said. "I’m here to say Rand does not have the Libertarian ideology."
Meanwhile, Ken Moellman, chairman of the Libertarian Party of Kentucky, disavowed on Thursday the statements made by Koch, stating that they were "not an official communication or an official stance".
What will you do when a majority of Kentucky voters elect Rand Paul? As I said before most voters don't see that as a senator he would have that much power. I have to admit I would rather see senator Rand Paul in the national eye than Jim Bunning or especially Mitch McConnell. Maybe he would be all the rope it takes to hang the Libertarians.[i'm not laughing at kentucky, just one of its citizens]
okay, sure, bunning is insane and mcconnell somewhat less than mammalianobxjerry wrote:I have to admit I would rather see senator Rand Paul in the national eye than Jim Bunning or especially Mitch McConnell.
and it's possible that once rand paul sets the coal companies free, and miner death counts explode, that kentucky voters will see the error of their ways
i have a weird sense of kentucky in that everyone i or mrs bugman knows lives in louisville or paducah and is really liberal
[kinda like if everyone you knew in montana was from butte]
so what do i know . . .

Yes, weasels are mammals. It is unfair to say McConnell is a weasel. Unfair to the comparative good name of weasels. I can't say that I know anyone that says loud and proud that they've voted for him. I'm just thankful that we have Texas as undisputed champion for sending the lousiest politicians into the national arena.
There is nothing good about coal other than it's a cheap energy source. All things considered, it's arguable whether that's a good thing. My big concern is what would replace the income for people and communities if coal mining is taken out of the mix. I'm hoping IF Rand Paul is elected and coal mining becomes an issue the light focused will have a positive outcome. When we see how the gulf fishermen come out that may give us some clue. They seem adamant that they don't want a bail out-hand out. They want to work.

this is a coal state too, just as dirty, but a lot safer to mine [open pit]obxjerry wrote:There is nothing good about coal other than it's a cheap energy source.
people love it as there are really very few options for making a living here
