[SOLVED] Need keyboard shortcut to "show desktop" in JWM

#1 Post by dru5k1 »

(puppy 4.21)

I'm using jwm and it looks great, but I've got no ShowDesktop
keyboard shortcut, can you tell me how?

(I was thinking of an invisible rox-filer-desktop-icon with a
command in it and *the shortcut capability is there*
if all else failed)

there's a little doohickey in the taskbar, next to the start [menu?] button

[sorry, am using mrs bugman's win98 box for some demented reason and can't be more specific -- damn thing's sucking my brains right outta my head]

EDIT oh, wait, keyboard shortcut, see i told you i was hooked up to the debraining machine

there's a way, someone still capacitated and cephalous will be with you shortly

The jwm manual doesn't say so, but I just tested and you can use "showdesktop" as an action for a key binding (although I am using a development build of jwm, so I guess this could possibly be a new feature).
Look in /root/.jwm/jwmrc-personal, which is where the key bindings usually are in Puppy.
Also note you need to restart jwm before configuration changes take effect. And you might want to try running `jwm -p` before restarting jwm, to check that you haven't made a mistake.

For a keyboard shortcut, try:

ALT + 1 (switches to desktop 1)
ALT + 2 (to switch to desktop 2)
(and so on)

I just found out about this myself from here: http://tinycorelinux.com/forum/index.php?topic=2923.0.

Ah, all those years of not knowing...! Thanks for the question!

Hmmm, that's strange.

I'm also running Puppy 4.21, and i just double-checked that I'm running JWM.

Pressing Alt and 1 definitely brings up desktop 1 for me (Alt and 2 etc. work too)...

Indy - they want a keyboard shortcut for showdesktop (i.e. minimising all the windows on the current desktop), not for switching between desktops.

dru5k1 - you can edit /root/.jwm/jwmrc-personal to set up a keyboard shortcut for showdesktop. I presume what you said wasn't working was the ALT+1 / ALT+2 suggestion?

Open /root/.jwm/jwmrc-personal in a text editor.
Add this line near the bottom: <Key mask="A" key="d">showdesktop</Key>
(substituting "d" with whatever key you want to use).
Save file and restart jwm (in the Shutdown menu).
You should now be able to show the desktop using "Alt" and "d" keys.

dru5k1,
Well your comment is confusing.
Does it work as you want or not?
If it works and for the benefit of fellow posters edit the subject of your initial post and add [SOLVED] to it.

bugman: that was a funny post! "sucking my brain out"

disciple::aux::nz: you are absolutely ryt

hmm-so what happened was I was playing around with 'all' the configuration possibilities and I ended up throwing in Puppy 5.25 I think? as you all know it's now got a different setup and Hyper+D is included
the reason I thought of an 'invisible' desktop-icon was that I understand these completey ala http://rhinoweb.us and I 'shortcut-key' my internet browser, screensaver, terminal and even spotify now too
