Tipsy Puppy 4.1.3 with universal video driver, now R1
Tipsy Puppy 4.1.3 with universal video driver, now R1
Oh, no, Puppy Linux has drunk way too much wine again, and now he's all wobbly! Look, he's running Windows apps as if he were Windows!
Big thanks to all the people who have contributed to this very Tipsy Puppy, especially:
+gray, who made NOP 4.1.3, which is the (hopefully proud) parent of Tipsy.
+MU, who spent many hours troubleshooting scripts so that Tipsy could run on many graphics cards.
+technosaurus, who keeps updating wine (Windows Is Not Emulated) so fast that it's hard to keep up with it. Now in version 1.1.18
+and all the others who have made the other components of Tipsy: dosbox, pwidgets, streamtuner, timidity++ (midi system), etc.
For those of you who won't read on, here's the puppy:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7M1EQC9Q
Update: Revision 1, with some bugs squashed and wine 1.1.28:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3FPIREF0
The goal I had for Tipsy Puppy is to carry "my computer" on a flashdrive. I want to be able to move from machine to machine, taking possession of its hardware and running my apps as seamlessly as possible.
But many of those apps are video games, and that means powerful graphics and (at least, for now) the ability to run Windows programs, hence the Wine. I've also thrown in DOSbox, for those old programs that are still a lot of fun, plus Timidity++ (midi music for games), and some of the amenities in Puppy 4.2, like streamtuner and pwidgets.
Faithful to NOP, its parent, Tipsy has no word processor, spreadsheet, etc., so you can add your favorite pet or sfs. To this effect, it incorporates the load_sfs script from this forum, which can load as many as you want without restarting.
The biggest difference between this Tipsy and the previous one (4.1.2, also in this forum), is the universal video driver, combining packages made by MU and gray, plus some script tricks by MU, which will hopefully cover most video cards found in a computer able to boot from USB. Because of this, Tipsy has put on a few megabytes, tipping the scales at over 200 MB, but it's probably worth it. It can also run Compiz fusion (pretty wobbly windows!), thanks to MU's clever scripts, modified from those in Newyearspup.
It still has a few bugs, which I hope you're going to help me squash:
1. the Compiz Config Settings Manager doesn't display any icons, I don't know why. It still fully functional, though. This has been solved in R1, thanks to tazoc
2. sometimes Thunar (the file manager) hangs, especially when a tree view is displayed on the left pane. See the readme on the desktop, on how to avoid this.
3. some of the video drivers are not likely to get much use. Please let me know which drivers can Tipsy shed in future updates, in your opinion.
Thanks, and enjoy it.
Woof, woof, wrrrllloouf, hic!

Wow, sounds cool as Fgenius! I'll certainly look for a chance to download it. What I really like about it is that it showcases what Puppy can really do, all on a flash drive! Brilliant! It's like you stick your flash in, on someone else's computer and it boots up into a foreign but beautiful land
, flashing screens, pretty lights, 3D games, and while looking so great, it can still run their Windows programs! I like it Fgenius, I'd say you're on the right track

I am clearly not drunk enough to read the captcha.
Seems I need some captcha reading software because it seems crustacean proof
8 tries is my limit

Hopefully someone else or somewhere else will host

Update: OK I am in it now, with nvidia and compiz running OK
That was an easy set up for my nvidia card (I choose the medium modern driver)
It has NOP, Wine and Tipsy compiz wobble - just as advertised
MS Office, Photoshop and other Window programs should work OK
Well done!
- OK off on my new bicycle now to mow a lawn and repot herb seedlings

I had to enter the characters in lower case, it took several tries, too.
A mirror will be avialable in half an hour here:

I cannot check, if the upload succeeded, as I must leave now to go to my course.
Will check it in the evening.

Hi,
I noticed that you used Megavideo for your upload rather than the usual mirror sites.
Are you interested in marketing Tipsy puppy?
I have tested your derivative against several others in this forum, and have found it to be the most functional and stable one of all, the main distribution among them.
If you are interested in burning or distributing the iso, I am willing to make a website for you for no money down, and a split of any profit afterwards.
I have never offered anyone this work arrangement before, but as your operating system will be playing the integral role in my workspace, it would be a worthwhile and fulfilling next project for me.
Please have a look at our site and tell me what you think.

Great Job
Nicely done fgenius. First puplet I've tried with xfce.
PupDial did not probe my modem properly, so copying the wvdial.conf from my full 4.1.2 hdd install over fixed that. But then no blinky.
Would like single click launching, double click is too much like windoze. I
Multiple desktops with scroll wheel would be nice.
Xorg failed had to go with Xvesa.

Re: Compiz Config Settings Manager doesn't display any icons
I had the same problem in LHP and found this file '/usr/share/mime/magic' in Newyearspup02.fgenius wrote:1. the Compiz Config Settings Manager doesn't display any icons, I don't know why. It still fully functional, though.
I can't explain what it does but it worked for me in Lighthouse Pup.

I did not follow this thread in detail, but as you talk about mimetypes:
/usr/share/mime/ contains files, that are used to generate mime-info.
This concept is used by most desktops, except Puppys Rox-Filer.
To actually create/update those info, one must run the command:
update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
Often also one needs to run this after instaling a program:
update-desktop-database
These should be run, whenever a new program was added, that adds files to /usr/share/mime.
Xfce and the filemanager Thunar are based on shared mime info.
In Newyearspup I execute these two commands when Puppy starts, as it uses Pcmanfm, a filemanager, that also is based on it.
So when a new sfs is added, the mime info in it will be added to the database.

Hi, just thought you might like to know that Tipsy Puppy (and Lighthouse Pup) have been noted on Barry's Blog for built in Wine...
Keep up the good work,

Re: puppy with built in wine
Barry there is puplet called Tipsy Puppy. It has wine already inside of it and it uses xfce desktop environment. It is equipped with other building blocks like qt and gtk+ for better performance.
It's nice to be recognized and recommended!Posted on 26 Aug 2009, 14:39 by BarryK

Ah yes, I recall that name! I have located the home page:

Yes, i noticed on the server logs that there's been a flurry of activity referencing Barry's blog - there've been several more downloads of Tipsy over the past 24 hours because of it, so am in the process of uploading fgenius' updated version now and will update Tipsy's info on the appropriate page when that's done.
On that note, if you know anyone who needs a 'home page' for their puplet, i'll be happy to help out.
What i started off doing, a couple of months ago, was mirroring a few of the high-volume download puplets at the time (whether or not they had homes to go to), to take a little heat off caneri's servers, then added a few (the homeless ones?) that were being hosted on file-sharing sites....some users were having difficulties downloading from them, so wanted to add an alternative option.
My site desperately needs some good housekeeping now but i've been a bit distracted with other things lately....hopefully i'll get to concentrate on tidying up and improving the layout soon.
BTW tazOC, i use your excellent Lighthouse Pup too, thank you....so many wonderful puplets, so little time....howwwwl...

Never thought of it as a 'home page' for anyone's puplet but doesn't matter, long as fgenius doesn't mind and those who want it can find it....a home for 'homeless' puplets?Posted on 26 Aug 2009, 14:39 by BarryK

Hi fgenius. Thanks a million for your well-made puplet. Just the thing I need to replace my old WNOP. Compiz worked well on NVIDIA 5500 and 6150. Also worked flawless with ATI x1050 video card. No Compiz however for my old ATI9250 where I intend to do a full hard disk install. Any suggestions on how I can make compiz work on the 9250? Thanks.

loading sfs's ?
Slightly off topic but I understand that installing sfs's in tazoc'sd live cd cannot be done.
He referred to your pup and the way it is done by your live cd.
However I cannot find any hint here how sfs's can be loaded on your livecd.
Did I overlook something ?

4.3 version?
I'm not the only one interested in this (see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=46891), but is there any chance of Tipsy being ported/updated to Puppy Linux 4.3?
Thanks

couple of issues with Tipsy
yes..I will second that again.. would like to see this ported to 4.3, I just love this puppy and having a lot of fun playing with it
couple to things that am still working on is to get Java for Opera to work and once while watching youtube the browser froze up probably something to do with flash...
on another note I keep getting this popup when I open Opera that it needs to be upgraded to the latest but haven't figured out how?? tried disabling it through the preferences and get an error popup which is annoying ! anyone know how to fix it??
I tried running the latest Opera pet I could find but didnt seem to work.. the build think says 4105 (not at my pc at the mo) and the pet I found was some 4169 or something like that...
