Safecopy

#1 Post by aragon »

Home: http://safecopy.sourceforge.net/
Version: 1.6
safecopy is a data recovery tool which tries to extract as much data as possible from a problematic (i.e. damaged sectors) source - like floppy drives, harddisk partitions, CDs, tape devices, ..., where other tools like dd would fail doe to I/O errors.
NOTE: this tool is a last resort for 'damaged' drives to rescue as much data as possible. usage might enlarge the damage.

Compiled in 4.21.

CAUTION - Safecopy - CAUTION

#4 Post by dogone »

Just to let everyone know that running Safecopy on a floppy disk on my system works - once. Safecopy leaves the drive (not the disk) in an unknown and inoperable state. The drive stops working until the BIOS seeks the drive during boot. A soft reboot or power-off does not recover the drive! An attempt must be made to boot the floppy before the drive becomes operational again.

No permanent damage has been done, but this is NOT reassuring. I strongly recommend that Safecopy users exercise extreme caution.

Dogone, good point. i will make a note on the first post, that it should only be used as a last resort.

I've since been experimenting with ddrescue. It's works as advertised - very well. I can recommend it.

Puppians must note the distinction between "ddrescue" and "dd_rescue". They are different utilities. ddrescue is an improvement on dd_rescue. Basic operation is largely automatic and from what I can determine, quite safe.

As a side note, the creator of safecopy admits that he "did not know about dd_rescue and ddrescue" when he wrote his utility. Make of that what you will.

Apologies aragon for raining on the parade but this is a rather delicate topic ;-).

no need to. i've read a note about that in a german magazin, but simply forgot to place a note.

in general, they say it's a capable tool, but doing heavy reading on a defective drive won't be positive for the state of the drive.
