Hey Joe

Thanks for reply.

Yep discovered e100 was there no problem.

I had already tried alsaconfand that's what alerted me to the sound issue. I'll have another crack and see if I can force the modules to load.

Cheers

I tried to install Slacker 4.12 frugal by the short method of expanding the downloaded iso and copying the pertinent files to a subdirectory and editing menu.lst to start it.
It stops dead after loading the kernel, loading the pup214r.sfs file and then I get
init

init is the mother of all processes.

and there it sets.

I then burnt a cd and that booted fine.

And with scsi enabled, my Tekram scsi card was recognized as was my legal size 9600dpi Relisys Infinity Scorpio scanner.
I even scanned a test image with the scanner and it worked fine as well as my Iomega 250meg zip drive.

My system is a Compac Presario PC with AMD Athalon X2 4800 Dual-Core Processor, 3 gigs ram, Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE Graphics and SATA hard drive, IDE hard drive, SATA DVD/RW.

But the furgal boot stopping bugs me as to what caused it.

slaxer_pup is very partial to the correct sfs that needs to be loaded

Hey 8-bit
thanks for taking a test spin and trying from a cd

to remove any doubts just boot puppy pfix=ram
while testing

let me know what else works correctly and what doesn't
so I can fine tune things

thanks for your report :D

I noticed that version 4.12 didn't have this cli app lsof
so here it is if you need it
there's nothing special here should work fine
on any 4.12 base also

Ok, I guess my head isn't screwed on straight today.
Either that or too many new puppy versions out there!
Ignore the first part of my post on the init message on booting.
That was from another test version of puppy 214X6.iso.

But the scanner working was good as I had not been able to get it to work since Windows 98SE.
Driver incompatability.
Also, I was going to try once with Windows to scan an image at 9600dpi.
I scanned a very small postage stamp, saved the file, and found that I could not view it with anything I had an I sure did not have enough memory to view a very large BMP file at that time.
BTW, Windows Vista will not even come close to letting that scanner work!
Some people update their hardware. I keep the old stuff.
My 600dpi Xerox Docuprint P12 lazer printer. (300dpi and lost rear paper exit. Thank you windows!)
My Panasonic dot matrix printer as well as Epson 2500 dot matrix printer are for printing forms on multipart blank paper.
Try that with an inkjet or lazer!

I guess I just use hardware way beyond it's life expectancy.
Anyone know how to low level format an MFM hard drive :-)

Hi Joe

Apologies

Everything is ok with the lappy now, all modules load :) ( I thought I had sound a couple of weeks ago!)

It was my pupsave corrupted! I shifted it to a usb stick while I resized some partitions. Fortunately I always backup my important stuff!

Sorry if I caused any headaches.

Cheers

EZ4arabs
ok recompiled using the the same puppy tarball source

then rebuilt all again
updated page 14 again -5
11:00PM 7-13-09

first have to get the package correct
since there is no "package" for this because its built in to puppy
and the other firmware modules are compiled on the old kernel
need to replaced by this pet also

found the problem with the symlink :D

this took me awhile to sort out
the problem here was there was a code edit in the firm ware
the lines below are added to the official script for puppy
having the same name martian so this is where
the confussion was I diffed out the files the numbers are the line numbers
they are not part of the code
#--------------------------------------------------------

Code: Select all

19#BK July 2008 modified for Puppy Linux.

21#BK v405 if a different modem selected, quit...
22[ -h /dev/modem ] && [ "`readlink /dev/modem`" != "ttySM0" ] && exit

43#BK...
44   if [ "`lsmod | grep '^martian_dev'`" != "" ];then
45 ln -snf ttySM0 /dev/modem
46 fi
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
special note :so if you compile a newer version of this module or the same module for a different kernel you need to add the code lines I listed above to
the martian script that is provided in the tarball

and we have a winner :D
It worked and I was connected .was going to post using it but was cut off (ISP problem....I was at work... oops )

Well Joe this is very embarrassing and I am sorry for that as I was too hasty to report the ndiswrapper pet didn't work.
It did work and tried it (public wifi )
here is what I did:
at first when i installed the pet and used the network wizard I got the error that ndiswrapper no such file or device (or something like that.
so I tried the same steps as with martian pet.
1-Inform the System with Code:
depmod -a
2-Then the driver can be inserted in the kernel with: Code:
modprobe ndiswrapper

Confirm with: Code:
lsmod | grep ndiswrapper

and the card's light was on scanning ,then run network wizard and there it was .

No Words Can Express My Gratitude .Thank you so much my good friend.
keep up the good work Joe.
peace brother.

Hello Joe and EZ4arabs

Exactly what EZ4arabs did is how I got ndiswrapper to work. 8)

Hehe, but I have had bigger problems! But!!!! I have them sorted (I think  )

Well anyways, I had that problem with all my stuff on this lappy (IBM R31 Thinkpad) not being recognised, trackpoint, sound, modem, e100bla bla bla.. and what it turned out to be was that every time I created a pupsave it was getting corrupted. :? What on earth? Everything was there perfect when I booted 'puppy pfix=ram'. Ok, so I did some investigating at seems all the modules were missing in /lib/modules/2.6.27.7. Weird. Why? I narrowed it down to 2 possibilities, this machine or a corrupt Slaxer_Pup iso. Now this disc I have been using is a month or more old and getting a little scuffed up so I am presently downloading a new copy... Easier than finding where I backed it up!

Ok, my current workaround.... I booted 'puppy pfix=ram' and saved a copy of /lib/modules/2.6.27.7. I then mounted my pupsave and backed up /lib/modules/2.6.27.7 and then deleted it. I then put the fresh copy of /lib/modules/2.6.27.7 I saved from the cd and put it in my pupsave. I then copied over /lib/modules/2.6.27.7/misc/ndiswrapper.ko (from the backup) to /lib/modules/2.6.27.7/kernel/drivers/misc/ndiswrapper.ko in the pupsave. Why? Because that's where it seems to be in other pups.

Now the acid test. Booted (loading modified pupsave). Connected, ndiswrapper worked straight away, no calling it up! Rebooted, reconnected! Woohoo!

I'll let you know later if the error was the cd or machine specific but all seems well right now.

Oh, sound is working, e100 is there as is modem.

Cheers :)

PS: One more module for wireless I found missing , from my shed test box, P111 600, which is in other pups is the one for the Netgear 311, a Texas Instruments chipset, acx_1xx. ( I think I reported that one) I should be able to get it going ok with ndiswrapper though.

Just a quick summary for the release notes
for those that don't want to read through all the thread
and don't get the full report on what progress is happening

Slaxer_Pup was first posted Thu Apr 16, 2009
and is the same iso progressively built using packages

1._Imagine thats the very first version of "puppy" to ever use a kernel from another distro and NOT use the puppy config for the kernel

2.) I made use of the standard official packaging tools that slackware
uses so full slackware package tools compatability

3.)source to package ability to make your own packages then install them from source src2pkg first time ever used used on puppy

4.) I complied all the nvidia drivers

5.) hand built packages Mplayer, gimphoto , xmms , firefox3 and more

6) adding in 3rd party drivers for now the martian driver
and a new ndswrapper as "packages"

7.) edited and built a new initrd now also USB booting works
*thanks Paul 'pakt' for first fixing the error *

8.) This was built with lzm compression I also edited the mount script to allow SLAX modules to be mounted (but this is experimental)
but an easy way to hack any modules if needed the iso is 85MB

9.) smp support for duo cores newer kernel than the standard 4.12

10. many fixes to make it more stable (even though 4.12 was already a stable version to start with )

11.) grace steps up to the plate

this one wasn't so easy for me (newbie)
but maybe more interesting for you
AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58
ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150

this message scrolling all during boot process:
atkbd.c: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0x8d on isa0060/serio0).
atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e00d <keycode>' to make it known.
atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x8d on isa0060/serio0).

googled it and fixed unknown key error with bios upgrade

now I could get a better report :)

seems ok with xvesa
xorg extremely slow - splotchy rendering ie useless
is there a better graphics driver?
is it seeing the hardware correctly?
I am unsure - usb stick as scsi ?? dvd as hda ??

tried installing on usb with newer intrd - no joy - stops at:

sd 6 :0 :0 :0 : [sdb] SCSI removable disk

I've done these reports several times so hope I got the right ones :?

don't really know what I'm doing but willing to try

gammagone

thanks for posting the detailed lists

xorg in puppy is very cutdown
which means if you have problems using xorg
most likely you need some drivers and or libs
or xorg isn't configured correctly

or some third party driver is required

the full package for xorg is huge so I extended
xorg for those that need it adding in libs and drivers
that are part of the official package

its pointless to fight with configurations if you lack a driver

here is a cut down but still large extra drivers package for xorg
this is for anyone who needs more drivers for xorg
on a 4.12 base

I was careful so that this package doesn't overwrite your existing drivers it just adds to what wasn't installed in the base
on the standard 4.12 extending the video support
bringing it "closer" to a full distros support

Just wanted to drop a line and tell you I have a friend running slaxer_pup on her HP Pavilion mx50, and it is soooo much better for her than Win ME. Successfully loaded her sound when several other distros wouldn't, and we were able to get online, no problem. Another happy new puppy user! Thanks for making her day!

Could use some advice tho, if she wants Open Office, can I just use a pet get?

And also, she uses facebook, and her boyfriend posts videos from you tube. We can see the videos pretty well on the you tube site (it's a lot better if they are smaller) but when we try to click on them in facebook, we get an error about flash. Now she is only running 256 mb of ram, so that might be a large part of the problem, but if you can make any suggestuons, I will try to implement them and see if it helps.

Just so you know, videos played better in slaxer pup than in any other distro we tried, better than official 4.2.1, better than TEENpup, and even better than using Firefox 3.5 with flash in Browserpup.
