Privoxy 3.0.3 - web proxy with filtering capabilities

#1 Post by GuestToo »

Privoxy 3.0.3

Privoxy is a web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities
for protecting privacy, modifying web page content, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners,
pop-ups and other obnoxious Internet junk.

http://www.privoxy.org/
License: GPL - http://www.privoxy.org/user-manual/copyright.html

http://www.privoxy.org/user-manual/quickstart.html
basically, just configure your browser to use a proxy at port 8118
Firefox configuration: http://tinypic.com/bdllj5.png

SwitchProxy Tool - Firefox Extension
SwitchProxy lets you manage and switch
between multiple proxy configurations quickly and easily
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/m ... php?id=125

Tor Button - Firefox Extension
http://freehaven.net/~squires/torbutton/
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2275/

edit: Sep 18, 2005 - changed to work with the latest Tor package - also, i changed it so privoxy and privoxy-tor both use the same port 8118, you can change it back by editing /etc/privoxy/config-tor

edit: Aug 25, 2006 - fixed a few bugs, works with latest Tor package

i updated this package to work better with the latest Tor package

the interface could be improved ... for example, to switch from Privoxy mode to Privoxy-and-Tor mode you would click Killall then click Privoxy-Tor

Privoxy is now up to version 3.06 (stable). Would it be possible to get an updated .pet package for Puppy 2.15CE Final that could be installed through Puppy-Software-Installer? I don't want to use an old .pup package for fear of breaking my system. I tried that with plugger and it broke SeaMonkey (besides the fact, that SeaMonkey never recognized the new installed plugin).

I really like Privoxy. It was very easy to use and configure.

I am trying to install privoxy-3.0.8-stable
I added user and group privoxy.
Then ./configure --with-user=privoxy --with-group=privoxy
I got :

Code: Select all

checking for group... configure: error: There is no 'groups' program on this system
Anyone can help ?

groups is part of the core-utils.
I attach it, extract to /bin

The full core-utils are here:
http://dotpups.de/diverse-tgz/core-utils.tgz

Do NOT "install", just extract to a temporary folder, and copy single files you need.
Overwriting existing files might break Puppy!

If you still get errors, please post them.
Maybe also the shadow utils are needed, they usually manage user related settings.

Thanks MU ! 8)
groups not in puppy ? I guess because not used so much and not included in busybox.
I also needed "id" from core-utils, because different options from busybox.
Compilation and installation successful now.

yes, as Puppy is intended to run as root as a Live-CD.

Grafpup adds Multi-User support, but Nathan Fisher is doing wonders there.
Apart from adding required programs, he also must rewrite several scripts.

Puppy itself has tinylogin , which is a cut-down user management.
Myself I added a util to run Seamonkey or other programs as unprivileged user:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=28014

It includes some shadow utils.

Cordialement ;)

I know this thread is long dead, but I happened to be playing with this over the weekend and had exactly the same problem as earwicker...shows that tor and privoxy are running, set to use the correct proxy on my browser, but the ip address stays the same with or without the proxy...hmmm, is it because I am running this as root?

Any one else out there trying to get tor/privoxy (onion router) to work? Would love feedback on this so that I can anon surf periodically, at least... 8)

**Edit: gonna try the browser config from here and see if that is better...who has had luck with either of these? Anyone recommend more recent updates/posts? Not much on the search for tor, onion router, etc....

I have been using FirePup and Seamonkey, occasionally Opera...should I just go ahead and find a pet of Firefox? Can I just do this (your suggestion) with FirePup (ttuuxxx: opinion?)?

...I'm open to suggestions...I just think some level of anonymity at various points and times is a good idea with the current governments out there...no matter how clean your search record is to you it can look pretty weird to an outsider...

For starters you do not need to start tor and privoxy from the command line.

Valpy's pets are setup to start both tor and privoxy and there is no need to edit privoxy conf to chain it to tor.

If I remember right, you should find a privoxy icon in my-applications in your root directory. Drag it to your desktop if you wish. This gives you a simple set of three switches to run privoxy or tor separately or together. It also opens a log so you can see exactly what is going on. Make sure your time zone is set correctly or tor will not work.

You need to set your browser to use localhost or 127.0.0.1 and port 8118.

Privoxy is nice. It filters a lot of unwanted ads, and such and can speed up browsing.

Yeah, I've got all that set up but it still isn't going...I'm going to check the time zone thing again...I can have tor and privoxy running at the same time, but the privoxy-tor option won't enable at the same time. Or vice versa: privoxy-tor, but not the seperate tor and privoxy.

I have it set to 127.0.0.1 and the port at 8118 and it opens up and runs fine, just the ip address is the same (therefore it isn't working). If I have just the privoxy-tor thing running the browser tries to open a page but never does, so something is off there.

Like I said, there are a couple more things for me to check (didn't have time last night) but I'm clearly missing something...might change the tor package I have (someone told me that the one I have isn't compatable)...I'll post back.

Not sure what is going on. Valpy's pets have been bullet-proof for me in any puplet I've tried.

Good place to check if tor is running is ...

Nope...haven't got it to go.

Ok, here are some pictures...when i run tor and privoxy and toggle tor button, I get the attached error message. When I run the Privoxy-tor script as indicated in the picture, it just loads and nothing happens.

Here is what I have installed:
tor-0.2.0.34-s.pet
privoxy-3.0.8-d.pet

I am now up to 3.5 Firefox with torbutton, by the way.

Oh, and the torrbutton does use privoxy, if you check the preferences. Should I set it not to run privoxy?

I've attached a screenshot of what I get when I activate the tor/privoxy switch.
I do not use torbutton as it also sets https to use tor. Fake security certificates have been used by unscrupulous node operators to access private info.

hayagix: are you running it as root? I get the terminal opening and it looks pretty much the same, but I don't think I get that message in the background...mine looks grumpier (didn't connect, you're a bad boy for running this from root, stuff like that)...I'll check again tonight and post back.

Thanks for the feedback and keep it coming... 8)
