Hey WhoDo if Blinky is unattaching itself from the taskbar, as seen here at the top of the page http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 242#286242
then you would have nothing to lose using the updated one I posted :)
Its been a issue with JWM for donkeys ages. Maybe the updated version I posted wouldn't do that, also the way I implemented, everytime you refresh menus, it kills blinky and freememory and then restarts it. Now thats a better system then running it off xinitrc. at least if it did manage to leave the taskbar, one simple refresh and its back on it again. I'm 100% sure that the updated freememory/Blinky package I provided is a better alternative to the current system.

Gee, ten pages in one day... Heated discussions... Ahhh, Puppy's getting adult! Must be careful strolling around in the forum now.

Well, Puppy 4.2RC4: good overall impression. But still, trying to "tune in" most of the streaming radios in GXine's lists yields an error message -- "The xine engine failed to start" or "Connection refused". Better not having ready-made lists at all, and let the user try his/her luck personally...

Will the lists be updated and the needed codecs included in 4.2 Final? ...Or what did I miss?

The first station on gxine I tried worked, but the second didn't, I have other things to do than test all the stations, If you could test them and report back the broken ones I could update the list with the broken ones omitted.
In other words, care to lend a hand?

Ok, then maybe I have it confused with my current working pre-build :? ... either way it will be in the next release.

WhoDo which cups package are you using, I'm confused, I made so many of them  Could you post it or give me the full name ?
Theres a new beta out and it has a lot of improvements, so I'm compiling it and would like to repackage the current one with updated backend. Its the easiest way of doing it.

CHANGES IN CUPS V1.4b3

- Documentation fixes (STR #3044, STR #3057)
- The scheduler did not write the printers out for classes.
- CUPS-Get-PPDs did not work properly when filtering by language,
product, or psversion (STR #3136)
- The scheduler now kills job filters when it takes more than 30 seconds
(configurable) to cancel or hold the job.
- The cupstestppd program did not validate the capitalization of
filenames in the PPD file.
- The cupstestppd program did not validate the PageSize and PageRegion
values.
- The cups-deviced helper program could miss reporting some backend
devices (STR #3108)
- The cupsSideChannelSNMP* functions did not work.
- The scheduler could consume 100% CPU when jobs were canceled.
- Added complete localizations for Japanese, Polish, and Russian and
partial localizations for Chinese, Danish, German, Finnish, French,
Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, and Swedish (STR #3096,
STR #3098, STR #3109, STR #3111)
- Clicking on "Select Another Make/Manufacturer" in the web interface
incorrectly added the printer (STR #3095)
- The scheduler no longer uses programs with insecure file
permissions.
- httpAssembleURI*() did not escape backslashes in hostnames.
- The dnssd backend did not unquote "full names" before creating the
device URI.
- The scheduler now supports JobRetryInterval values less than 10
seconds.
- Updated the Spanish localization (STR #3090)
- The scheduler did not redo Bonjour/DNS-SD registrations when updating
them failed.
- The "authenticated" policy incorrectly required authentication for
status operations.
- ppdOpen*() incorrectly loaded PPDs with multiple JobPatchFile
keywords.
- The network backends no longer report the SNMP "offline" status bit
since some printers report this status when the printer is busy
printing, warming up, etc.
- The scheduler no longer logs child processes killed via SIGKILL as
"crashed".
- The printer link shown on the "job moved" template was bad (STR #3085)
- Updated the HTML templates to use the final HTML 4 DOCTYPE (STR #3086)
- The scheduler did not track the "paused" reason properly if a
printer had other reasons associated with it.
- cupsSendRequest() did not clear old local certificate auth data.
- The PPD compiler did not search for localization files properly
(STR #3084)
- cupsGetNamedDest() did not use the fallback default like
cupsGetDests*() (STR #3082)
- The scheduler now provides a LogTimeFormat directive to enable
microseconds in the date and time that are logged.
- The scheduler now provides a MultipleOperationTimeout directive to
control the timeout for multi-file print jobs.
- The configure script incorrectly allowed Avahi to be used for DNS-SD
printer discovery (STR #3065)
- The web interface and scheduler did not support URIs up to 1024 bytes
in length (STR #3072)
- Fixed pdftops issues with page sizes (STR #3063)
- Fixed pdftops issues with Ghostscript (STR #3062)
- The scheduler incorrectly registered default profiles for PostScript
printers with no specified colorspace.
- The scheduler incorrectly created an empty org.cups.printers.plist
file on Mac OS X.
- cupsGetPPD3() did not look for local PPDs in the right directory.
- SNMP lookups via side-channel did not work for NULL-VALUE and
and OCTET-STRING OIDs containing nul characters.
- The libusb-based USB backend did not work.
- The scheduler did not set the printer-commands attribute correctly
for some PPDs.
- The ppdi utility did not work.
- The web interface no longer uses multi-part output with old or broken
web browsers (STR #3049)
- CUPS now conforms to the draft IPP/2.0 and IPP/2.1 specification.
- Added a new cupsGetConflicts() API to get a list of conflicting
options.
- The PPD compiler didn't localize options or choices that did not
have associated translation text (STR #3045)
- Updated the Spanish localization (STR #3043)
- Fixed build problems (STR #3040, STR #3047)
- cupsResolveConflicts() did not resolve using the default option
choice in some cases due to the mirror UIConstraints that are
present in most PPD files.
- The scheduler did not honor MIME type priorities.
- The commandtops filter incorrectly used the JCLBegin code to end
its jobs.
- The default BrowseLocalProtocols value was not set properly.
- Since the commandtops filter does not actually support ReportLevels
all on its own, don't list that printer command by default for PS
printers.
- The scheduler did not give filters a chance to log errors or update
printer attributes when a job was canceled.
- The scheduler did not clear the "connecting-to-device" reason keyword
when a job finished.

Pawdioconverter

#148 Post by pitape »

Has anyone tried Pawdioconverter with Puppy 4.2.RC4?
I tried with a Apple mp4a (AAC) to mp3 (standard option, not ffmmpg or sox) but it fails. Error "faad" reported

You need to install the faad converter package for that to work. Use the Install icon on your desktop and click on faad in the window

Hope that helps

Ok, I'm only up to page 4 on this thread, but I'm trying to catch up, so if this bug has been reported, then sorry for the repeat:

I started up rc4, love the look overall and I have comments regarding whether we are emulating vista or whatever (I think that it should look at least as good, then true Puppy purists can modify with changes they want) but this thread is for bugs & fixes:

I love the icons and general color theme, but think it should have a different background than the ocean one, although it doesn't look too bad. But those icons and gtk are awesome (especially the folder icons; great!)...

ANYWAY, here is the bug:

Error loading backdrop image. Failed to open file '/usr/share/backgrounds/Pwidgets_background': No such file or directory. Backdrop removed.

I tried a different background in the same folder, no love. I tried one from a different folder, no dice. It loads the image, then it looks like Pwidgets runs something, then it gets rid of the image and kicks back the error.

Again, sorry if that was already reported...now I'm going to work my way up the thread...

Well WhoDo I did apologize earlier to you and when I needed help like figuring out the cups package your using to build 4.2RC4 it would be best for everybody's interest if you stop ignoring me, Really it wasted at least 1 hr searching back all those pages to find out which one you were using and then I added the fix anyways. I also updated the blinky so nows theres a space between blinky and freememory applete, I just reversed the order of them launching.
Anyways newer Blinky and Cups beta3 is on page 1

Ps maybe we just all need a great big group hug :)

asof@822

P4.20-RC4
tested on: Compaq 5225
Processor - AMD-K6 3D @380MHz
RAM - 256M
onboard vidcard - ATI 3D Rage LT Pro
onboard sound - (ALSA config issues with es18xx)
limitations - no printer, no internet connection, ES18xx onboard soundcard not expected to work (alsaconfig 'locks' onto 1st-in-list-op13sa2 rather than *selected* es18xx)

First impression - boots with expected setup (ps/2 maus is at top of list now), Xorg selected for 1024x768-16bit (as usual, some xorg wording oddness "..MAXIMUM for monitor" as a midrange selection in list  it's an LCD tv with VGA input, works oki w/ Rage but ratio may need handedit of xorg.conf) .. no big deal as far as display (widgets smoothly appear even though delayedrun infobox not clicked) .. no /root/.conkyrc file :( .. pwidgets will likely be acceptable for the main public (cpu_ram in one double bar looks bad as cpu unaveraged looks spastic even if accurate, cpu graph is acceptable visually if a bit tall for my taste, a strftime-formatable date-time bar would be welcome in terms of space-saving)

Session 'lost' if walked away from (no activity even though screensaver bumped up to 3600 sec), may be an acpi of the Compaq but it used to come back by ESC key, not now :| - about a minute until all settled on desktop after initial-xsetup .. pwidgets incredibly balky at changing themes (major-league load .. definitely not ready for primetime on vintage machines) .. Geany is 'cheapened' from the fine editor it is by the dumb 'Note' desktop icon (IMO), if it was mousepad that'd fly but I wouldn't blame the Geanygirl if she walked away after jumping out of the cozy lamp for that shack of an icon (imo, lol vintage cartoon miniature coming up, sure animation's possible after all there was that dummy of a paperclip tinking on my screen not all that far in the past ;). Seriously, I usually fix that leafpad/geany mixup (and make the r-click renameable) for my own predilections by messing with the .DirIcon a bit (surprisingly, it's a fairly stable kludge).

"blink" on "Set date and time" was a good 8 sec, but only on first try (thereafter it was barely noticeable, with practice it should be possible to hand-sync within a sec or two) .. and no timezone anomalies anymore (good job and well done, whosoever did that and lots of other fine things :D )

A couple hours in and it all looks real good for a short final test ..
An apple can be polished almost forever but it's even better eaten :D
.. a few lil' bugs is tasty and nutritious ..

______addendi______

@056 - no shutdown/save (yet), comes up from screensaver-nap with ESC reliably - just read Capoverde p13.5 and petget may not work for me since no conn on Compaq 5225, but dl'd dotpets install just fine from thumbdrive (H00ray), now for some serious load 'til it pukes ...

I agree; I have been impressed and amazed by the abilities of both ttuuxxx and whodo, not to mention others of the group and it would be a shame if the medium that is being used to communicate, with all it's limitations, contributes to the disagreement. It's hard to do a "hug" on a computer forum...

I am impressed by all those that have contributed to Puppy and I would hate to see it fall by the way-side over petty squabbles as I've seen occur with other distro's.

Anyway, to edit my previous bug post: I tried this on another one of my computers and that bug does not occur. Perhaps a ram issue? I don't know, but thought I should mention it.

It should also be noted that I have changed computers and both are wireless with different wireless devices and I was able to gain access and set them up with both of them, so 4.2 certainly has that going for it...

Gladly! For the moment, I've tested about 50 of the listed stations -- down to about halfway in the "TV" list -- and must stop for lack of time. The only streamers that connected regularly were:

Alternative: BBC Radio 1xtra, BBC 6 Music; BBC Asian Network said it could not connect to the requested service, but actually spoke.

Rock: Heavy Metal Radio, Rockfun 24

Pop: --

News & Sport: BBC Radio 5, BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

News & talk: --

TV: BBC News 24 (summary)

Will go on later.

@WhoDo: I downloaded and tested the revised xorgwizard. As they say "close but no cigar". The script now does return to the wizard after a failed test but the next screen has an error. The "FINISHED" button renders too high, up in the middle of the last sentence in the gray box. Also, if you select "FINISHED" on that screen, on the next screen where it gives the choice of "DONE" or "XVESA" the word DONE does not print. I went back and checked the original 412 xorgwizard and it did not have this problem.

bad news on cups

#158 Post by Minnesota »

Bad news on the new cups pet.
1) End of pet screen says item is on fun menu....???? no big deal, but I assume you use printer wizard on setup menu or manage printer on system...

2) still 100% usage.

3) Abiword printing blank page
4) gnumeric gives Can't prompt for authorization.. error....
Kill cups in Htop... can not restart... gives "failed to connect"....further on page.. 631 error
Tested two systems to same brother HL1440 printer
New boot:
Difficult to describe what I did next... first tried original cups in rc4, printed page both parallel and usb (100%cpu)....next ran pet.. restarted x... it must be remembering something as test page will not run nor anything after new pet.. however.. CPU is down to normal....

Used....cups-1.4b3-i386-v1.pet hope right pet from page 1?

Is there a difference from using restart menu and restart x? Will both work?

whodo

should I post here or in pwidgets?
Suggestion for clock issue on first boot
You would try anything right? so try this:
First boot:
current sequence: desktop background + desktop icons --> puppy welcome note (please click bla bla for more info bla bla) --> pwidgets appear

suggested sequence: desktop background + desktop icons --> pwidgets appear --> welcome note

If this also doesn't work I'll shut up about this... Smile

Not ram, must be because you didn't have a clean/fresh boot
