New Pup for the Eeepc based on Puppy 301
Odd question- about how much SSD space does Pupeee take up in its current installation? Once it gets out of beta I'm thinking about reformatting everything but the emergency partition and dropping it on my eee.
Maybe by then I'll have access to an external CD drive, too.
Oh, and another question? Does Pupeee have anything to actually tell you how much SSD space you have used and available? Xandros doesn't seem to want to tell me unless I run out.

It's about 120MB as a frugal install, plus whatever you choose as a size for the pup_save file.teh603 wrote:Odd question- about how much SSD space does Pupeee take up in its current installation?
Partview is an easy way to tell.teh603 wrote: Oh, and another question? Does Pupeee have anything to actually tell you how much SSD space you have used and available? Xandros doesn't seem to want to tell me unless I run out.

One thing I love about Puppy is that it is so small yet has so many tools and applications.
Pupeee Beta 4 is now on the community news page and Softpedia.

Some observations on PupeeeB4
Downloaded and installed PupeeB4 and set it up to boot from a 2GB USB key and I am quite pleased so far - everything appears to work and the black vista theme looks good. One thing you may want to include in your new control panel application would be a way to easily change default applications for things like the browser and/or email client - One of the main things I like about the XFCE desktop is that ability to easily change/designate default programs. Given that change Pupeee would be a stone winner - but its pretty darn good as is. Keep up the good work.

Much to my surprise I am leaving this PuppySpeak facility on whilst using Pupeee
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 613#182613
Incidentally I am using PupEEE from an x86 computer (ie. PC)
and it works fine.
Noticed a constellation map (Xpins) under utilities in case I inadvertently teleport to another location (I can use the sky to navigate my position)
Xandros comes with limited voice recognition.
How good is that when on? Can we do better? Any thoughts?
Another question I saw a Windows hack for the Eeepc which ups the resolution (displays more info). Can this be done on Linux?

Good idea. It's on my list.stlchuck wrote:One thing you may want to include in your new control panel application would be a way to easily change default applications for things like the browser and/or email client - One of the main things I like about the XFCE desktop is that ability to easily change/designate default programs.
Limited is a good description. It works about as well as the Mac OSX voice recognition. I could never get either one to work reliably. I don't know why a cell phone can have great voice recognition but a multi billion dollar software company like Apple can't get it right.Lobster wrote: Xandros comes with limited voice recognition.

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about screen resolution?Lobster wrote: Another question I saw a Windows hack for the Eeepc which ups the resolution (displays more info). Can this be done on Linux?
I downloaded the needed files for JWMSpeak. It looks pretty small so it just may end up in the next Pupeee with an option in the Appearance section of the control panel to turn it off and on.Lobster wrote:Much to my surprise I am leaving this PuppySpeak facility on whilst using Pupeee

sd usb question
dvw86 if i may ask, my sd cards, 3 of them will show all the same files or none. this depends on th order of mounting. for ex if i put a sd card into pc eee, the next cards show the same thing, usb seems to be doing the same thing. do you think this might be an issue with the eee pc. thanks if i need to be posting questions here let me know thank you.
Re: sd usb question
Did you try clicking on the "refresh" icon in Rox? It's right next to the magnifying glass with the plus sign in it.tqwe wrote:dvw86 if i may ask, my sd cards, 3 of them will show all the same files or none. this depends on th order of mounting. for ex if i put a sd card into pc eee, the next cards show the same thing, usb seems to be doing the same thing. do you think this might be an issue with the eee pc. thanks if i need to be posting questions here let me know thank you.
refresh
wow that was pretty neat., thank you dvw86,that will sure make it easier to install some things to puppy. for a time there i thought all my sd cards and usb keys were broken. while i have your attention, do you know of a pet conky for ease of install. again i thanks.
Hi again

how to upgade
I am using v3 happily from a 2GB SD card. Now that v4 is out, I'm keen to upgrade but would also like to keep the settings I have on v3. Can I simply replace a few files on the SD taken from the new ISO? If yest then which files?
To update to the next version, one only has to copy the new vmlinuz, the new initrd.gz, the new version of pup_301-eee.sfs and the new zdrv_301.sfs from the iso to the SD card. The release notes for the beta do say that you should erase and create a save file. You may be able to keep the save file depending on what changes you have made to the old version. However, there is no guarantee that it will work. The new version has several new applications. The old save file will not have the files for the new applications, that is reason for creating a new save file. When I changed to the new version, I created a new save file (deleted the old first). Once PupEee gets out of the beta version, one will be able to just copy the four new system files. I hope this helps.
Just tried only copying the four system files on USB device with PupEee 3. Some changes for the new version were made, but, none of the new applications were present. One needs to create a new pup save file.

One needs to use the alsamixer command in a rxvt console to set the controls.
To ensure the microphone works for record, the following alsamizer controls must be set to on:
Control "Mic" set to a value of 100 (up arrow raise and un-mute the control with the "M" key)
Control "Capture" set to a value of 97 (up arrow raises, "M" key has no effect)
Control "Input Source set to Mic ("up/down" arrow keys are used to select the source)
To see all the controls, use the "tab" key to make the View line high light "All".
It seems that when alsa starts up, the mic and capture are turned off. So, one has to check to ensure that they are turned on.
Some notes on the microphone. The EeePC microphone is mono and present only on the left channel. The right channel is unteminated so it picks up some computer noise. I have tried to turn off the right channel, but, both soxgui and audacity seem to turn on the right channel. The microphone is mounted on the botton of the EeePC, which results in your voice being a bit muffed and key/mouse clicks being picked up. I have tried a headset with a microphone. It helps, but, the microphone is also mono and noise is still there.
All of the above information was done with PupEee version 4 (beta)I hope this helps.

Interesting, I just timed Pupeee booting from a frugal install off of the internal SSD and a 128MB pup_save file. Total time from the push of the button to the working desktop was 48 seconds. It felt like it took longer to boot the kernel than it did to load Pupeee. I'm not sure what all this means, but I thought it was interesting. I'm sure that a full hard drive install would be faster since it would not have to load everything into RAM.
Hi
A full hdd install is faster to start but I went back to frugal 'cos I lost one of my fave features, the battery indicator on the tool bar and in conky refused to work, no matter what I did, could not fathom why?
Went back to frugal - bingo - all ok.
All above relates to earlier releases - have not tried latest release as full hdd install.
Brilliant stuff BTW - works a treat on my 6yr old Acer laptop with a frugul to hda1. 233mb ram, 2.5Ghz celeron proc.
Did the hdd install on 5yr old lower spec Patriot laptop with
96mb ram, 1Ghz celeron proc.
Ran very well and reasonably fast - all ok - except battery readouts both no go.
As above - went back to frugal - everything perfect.
Luv the new stuff - keep it coming - and MONSTER MEGA thanks for all your time, skills and effort.
One very impressed and very happy Puppy n00bie
Best regards - Ray MK
