Skypeforlinux installation problems (SOLVED)

Hello all - I'm trying to install this package on Bionic 64bit. Quickpet takes you to Skype website so I downloaded the Debian package.
It appeared to install OK although it did report it had no menu entry but I can live with that.
However when I launched it from the terminal it reported the following:-

/usr/bin/skypeforlinux: line 3: /etc/init.d/elogind: Permission denied
/usr/bin/skypeforlinux: line 7: /skype-startup.log: Permission denied
killall: elogind: no process killed
/usr/bin/skypeforlinux: line 9: /etc/init.d/elogind: Permission denied
chmod: changing permissions of '/etc/init.d/elogind': Operation not permitted
root# Failed to mount tmpfs at /sys/fs/cgroup: Operation not permitted
Failed to mount cgroup at /sys/fs/cgroup/elogind: No such file or directory
Out of memory.

I had the package on my old machine running Xenial so I installed it (Xenial) and it was exactly the same.

I changed the permissions of /etc/init.d/elogind to make it executable using ROX and it was the same.

Any of you clever people got any ideas?

I think you are out of memory when Skype is being loaded!!

thanks for the reply but that had occurred to me so I run Htop while it was loading and it told me I had 1.3Gb free.

Quickpet takes you to Skype website
Not when I did it.
It goes to the Bionicpup64 repository and downloads the deb package from there.

It works for me.
Bionicpup64 8.0, frugal, using save folder.

Make sure you have 150MB or more free space in your save.
Deb packages, will not warn you, if the save runs out of room, when installing. Pet packages are not much better.

In Bionicpup64 8.0
First run Quickpet->Info->Bionicpup updates
After it does the updates.
Reboot making sure to save.
This will make sure the changes are now being used.

You will need to use Puppy Package Manager(PPM) to uninstall the Skype you installed.
Reboot and save, to make sure the uninstall is completely done.

Try Quickpet->Net->Skype install again.
It should put a Skype entry in menu->Network->Skype to run it.

It was slow to start. Took about 7 to 10 sec. to show the Skype window.

....which is more than 2 years out of date. That's like, er, not much help, bigpup!

But it will take a while to fire up.....after all, it's an Electron app under the skin. That's based around a stripped-back Chromium browser.... :P

I didn't think Phil was updating Bionicpup any more. After all, he's working on Fossapup now, isn't he? :?

.....but MyCrudSoft have coding "diaorrhea" when it comes to Skype, 'cos it's updated every 8 days on average. Don't say I didn't warn you....

Latest update was 2020 jun 03.


It was stated that Quickpet was used to install Skype.
That did not work.
The age was not the issue, yet!
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected :shock:

Yah; fair comment. Many folks don't seem to know it's even there. Nice to see Phil's still adding odds & ends to it; he must be one of the very few Puppy devs who "support" their work for more than a short time.....

TBH, I'm surprised that old version still fires up; it was back in the very early 'beta' days of development for the 'new' Linux client.

With Bionicpup64 8.0 fully updated by Quickpet->Info->Bionicpup updates.

Downloaded and installed the latest Skypeforlinux deb from Skype web site.
Installed the above posted menu entry pet.
That Skype version runs if started from menu entry.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

hi Mike,

i went with this older version as skype changed so couldn't be installed from the website OTB.

also this particular version will remember your login details where as newer ones didn't. if you install gnome-keyring from the PPM (note that it says it's already installed but not all of it is, so reinstall to get the rest)

may need a reboot to start gnome-keyring then when you login you should get a popup asking to save the the login details.

Hm. Gnome-keyring, huh? I must know my Skype login details blindfolded by now; I've been trying to figure out for long enough if there's some way to get Skype to remember 'em.....

Ah, you're welcome. v84 should be out in the next few days or so; unlike peebee, who does a new package of Chromium for each "point" release, I only 'upgrade' once for each major release of Chrome.....i.e., v81 → v82 → v83 → v84, etc.

Be patient..! I know I do package a lot of different browsers, but in all honesty, they're the "glue" that hold so many online communities together. IMHO, they're one of the most important bits of general-purpose software there are.....

Skype, running in Puppy Linux, is only for dogs to use. :shock: :!:
