Need a basic Pup for network maintenance only

#1 Post by salgak »

I'm halfway hoping here that an appropriate Pup has already been created..

I'm looking for a quick-loading, strictly business loadup for network maintenance. No games. No media. No office suite.

Basically GUI, Terminal, SSH, something like FileZilla, a text editor (Notepad ++ would be ideal), a browser that I can install certificates into ( I know, I'm going to have to re-spin it. . . ), and WireShark/Ethereal.

Is there one like this out there already ? If not, suggestions ?

you can try building a WeeDog....you can create one with the most bare minimum or fully loaded. This OS may fit your needs although the stock Puppy Linux's like Bioinic have many tools but is only 300-400 megs and these may be okay.

WeeDog can be built with a custom plug file that will instruct at build time exactly what to include or not.

Wee Dog is not as refined as a Puppy Linux and some advanced knowledge helps but for an OS that is specifically built to do this task you require may be the way to go.

A good bet would be try a Puppy like Bionic and install what you require, since te Bionicpups are very trim from the start.
