Portable Windows games under WINE

#1 Post by Mike Walsh »

Morning, all.

I know many of you absolutely detest WINE, and won't have anything to do with it. However, for those of you who don't mind using it, I've made a couple of discoveries this evening.

I regularly scan the PortableApps website, because many of their Windows portables often run better under WINE than properly installed ones. Don't ask me why, but they do. I have an entire directory full of Portable apps on a remote, auto-mounted partition, sym-linked into /root of all my Pups, and started by a series of custom Menu entries I've written for this task.

Those of you who are into 'first-person shooters' will be familiar with AssaultCube, the Linux version of which is available through the PPM of many Pups. The portable version of the original 'Cube' appears to run perfectly under WINE. It's a 29 MB download.

(AssaultCube is also available as a portable app, too.....though I haven't yet tried this one out.)

Another one, which you may or may not be familiar with, is called 'Xonotic'. This can either be played by yourself, or online as a multi-player game. The 'portable' version of this also seems to function properly under WINE, too. This one's a big download.....around 900 MB. However, it seems to function - if a tad slowly - on my old Compaq desktop, using the onboard graphics, not a card; I can't use one anyway, 'cos my PCI-e slot has damaged pins. The speed is almost certainly down to the CPU's instruction sets - or rather, lack of them; the dual-core Athlon64 only tops out at SSE3s. And the RAM's only DDR1.....

Just FYI, that's all..! Enjoy.

Mike.
