xload coloured

#801 Post by Rodney Byne »

To roadkill13,

Thanks for your input, but that's not quite the whole story.

I read your link info on xload, very useful theory stuff
but lacks practical guidance.

By digging elsewhere I found out how to colour the scope, like this;
remove the hashes and quotes with -fg and -hl then type the
colours wanted, eg. for a red trace and two white lines as;

<Swallow name="xload" width="32">xload -nolabel -bg "#888888" -fg red -hl white</Swallow>

Initially after bootup, two white lines will show.
If cpu activity totally drops off, the two white lines will disappear,
then reappear later as activity picks up.

The scope is also useful in conjunction with the cputemp indicator.
If the pc air in & out vents get blocked up with dust and the
cooling fan blades get choked up with dust, the pc will get hot,
the fan will rev very high & the scope will show continuous
full-height red through over-heated cpu cores, even no apps
running on a static desktop.
A good cue to thoroughly vac out the pc.

Thanks for replying.
Regards.

ozsouh, thank you very much! I will try it this evening and let you know. I also want to answer your earlier question about trying to load that module after I do a new install tonight.

Sorry ozsouth but I have been unable to try your new kernel changes on Bionicpup64 UEFI version -- no way to get it onto the Acer R11 Chromebook, at least in all the ways I've tried.

1.) Make changes, then install to USB drive -- using universal installer -- not EFI compatible

2.) a.) Open the regular BionicPup ISO in Puppy's Isomaster, and add your changes, close and write a new ISO. dd that new ISO to a USB drive -- but it isn't EFI bootable.

3.) Boot regular BionicPup64 UEFI, and try to install to HD. Not possible since installer says it can't install on a UEFI system.

So, any other suggestions? How was the original UEFI compatible BionicPUP ISO made? It can't be frugal installed on a UEFI system?

Boot regular BionicPup64 UEFI
Make your modified iso.

First run Quickpet>Info>Bionicpup Updates
That wll install StickPup.
Try using menu>StickPup
This program will install the iso. It will install a uefi boot loader on the USB drive with a frugal install of your modified iso.

Note:
After StickPup finishes.
The USB drive may not show back on the desktop as one of the drive icons.
Run Puppy Event Manager>Rox icons
Select refresh
OK
This will refresh the desktop icons and the USB drive should now show as a drive icon on desktop.

@vtpup - I usually do a normal install to usb, then just copy the 2 new files (renamed to same as originals) over the originals.

Tried that first ozsouth, but that didn't boot -- UEFI problems with stick.

BigPup -- that DID work! And also @ozsouth, your new kernel with pinctrl-cherryview aboard also does work now to enable the keyboard in the Acer R11 Chromebook, and presumably other Intel Braswell chip Chromebooks.

Great work and help, guys....thank you!

I also have an Acer Chromebook R11, but am doing frugal install to internal drive.

Over in the Fatdog thread there was a kernel boot option "coldplug" that was required to allow the internal eMMC drive to be seen and load base sfs and save file from:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/web/fa ... l#coldplug

Is there any equivalent or comparable option for Puppy? (I tried the parameter on Puppy, didn't do anything)

But still, the R11 just seems a bit too new. No sound in Fatdog, and doesn't look to be any better in Bionicpup even if sfs and save works.(did the Fatdog trick to get it to boot, no sound)

On a positive note, Bionicpup does boot fine and works completely (with sound) on my other Acer C740 chromebook, same as with Fatdog. But that one has a real M.2 SSD (sda) instead of the eMMC on this R11.(mmcblk0)

@JD - I have a lenovo mini lappy with eMMC. Had to unhide it in Gparted (System menu, Gparted, right-click on drive, click manage flags & untick hidden) to boot from it.

Was that a regular Windows laptop? This is a Chromebook, and they are a bit trickier. Have to modify firmware and special disk preparation. But basically it's just a Ext4 partition on a GPT disk, no flags. It can boot vmlinuz and (huge) initrd, but kernel can't see sfs or save files. Not sure why exactly its only a problem on this one with eMMC, and the other one with M.2 SSD works fine.

After applying the bionicpup updates, the quickpet menu "OK" shows very small.
hi linuxcbon,

it's working fine here, maybe your graphics card doesn't like compton. try turning it off menu>>desktop>>compton

to test, click on /usr/local/quickpet/bionicfix_version

Does this mean that Fred's portable version is not considered an option?
It is after all very useful.

Also, the Mouse Input problem has been fixed,
but now it seems the settings are simply not saved at all.
hi westwest,

i think that the troubles you are having are because bionicpup is using the libinput driver for keyboard and mouse and i'm not sure that the old mouse & keyboard wizard fully supports it.

see the arch wiki for info on setting mouse acceleration with libinput https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mouse_acceleration

or you could install xserver-xorg-input-kbd & xserver-xorg-input-mouse from the ppm. add them as the drivers in xorg.conf. the wizard may work then

Do NOT let the Nvidia run package make the xorg.conf
It makes one that is not setup for Puppy.
hi bigpup,

as opposed to previous pups, bionicpup seems quite tolerant to letting nvidia rewrite the xorg.conf. i've been letting the nvidia-settings program rewrite the xorg.conf to setup my dual screens and have not run into any problems yet.
this is probably as bionicpup is using evdev/udev to setup devices.

in fact i had to run nvidia-xconfig to get PeteAir's 340 driver working

I dont know what you put into that .pet, cause thats the biggest driver pet that I have seen 97mb. But IT WORKED. It worked perfect with the laptop off the docking station. When I put it on the dock with a 22" monitor it wanted to set the res at 3120x1050, so I went into nvidia setting and disabled the lap screen and set the res to 1680x1050 and it is happy. What triggers did you set on the nvidia run to get it to work.
Thank you so much.
pete
hi PeteAir,
contrary to older puppies, i had to let the nvidia driver to write to xorg.conf, so the pets pinstall.sh script runs nvidia-xconfig as part of the install process, see answer to bigpup above.
also the driver is big as it also contains the 32bit libs (in essence the complete 32bit driver) needed for some steam games.

I had on previous builds a very lively mouse, on the final build this is still an issue even with sensitivity and threshold reduced to a minimum it's still a little brisk, any pointers (!) to bring the speed down some more

I use chrome and have had to move from 57 to 73 as I was stating to have page errors so now have to use spot

I know I will have to live with it so would like an 8gb savefile to provide sufficient space in spot downloads

I built with the largest (4gb) savefile but savefile resize only shows the first 4 options up to 512mb

I found the script and deleted the first few size options so it began at 4gb but the drop list is now unpopulated, I'm not clever enough to debug it so could someone take a peek?

:)
hi ally,
for the mouse issue you might need some manual configuration, see the arch wiki for info on Mouse acceleration with libinput https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mouse_acceleration

for the save file how is bionicpup installed usb hd etc? and what partition type?
