FWIW, I was able to run "standard" Puppy (as it was 2 years ago anyway) on a Compaq Deskpro (Pentium III/512M) without any problems I can recall.

I had some hassle getting Tiny Core Linux to work right on that box because of a peculiarity in the soundcard (had to change the clock rate).

Had it not been for an enormous amount of government R and D, there wouldn't be any computers or an internet for either proprietary or open source developers to make use of.

I use Tiny Core Linux, where you start with a very small base system and then download extensions with the applications you want:
