I think there was a puppy named "Obedient pup" that did use voice inputs, but it was way before I came to puppyland, so I am not sure.
I will search.
I will search.

There’s some debate over whether Android qualifies as a “Linux distribution.

Wouldn't it be nice, if people would just name things by their real meanings/names?
Linux = the Kernel
GNU/Linux = the OS incl. the Kernel
So Android is Linux but not GNU/Linux.
Hacker = I am and Richard Stallman is (as he has had stated)
Cracker = the Intruder (into a Network e.g.)
So Sony wasn't hacked, but cracked.

No, but I gave my old drum kit away for free to a music store collecting instruments for refugees!

Libre Writer Dragon speech to text extension likely isn't as good as on devices that more heavily depend upon such functionality.Anniekin wrote:* Speech to text input

1. The ability to search for and play anything on YouTube.
2. Send and receive voice mail using the Vocaroo service.
3. Use the new Google voice search with some spoken replies when Google provides them.
4. To open any website.
5. To open and navigate any hyperlinks on the BBC News site. (The ability to navigate webpage hyperlinks by voice is site dependant. It works on some but not others.)
6. Desktop and webpage navigation.

Both Acer and HP (Slate) tried to manufacture Android desktop machines
and they were a flop. The lack of multiple windows on the screen is a
big negative.
Apple may announce this year a new operating system based on iOS but
with multiple windows but this is just speculation on my part.
Steve Wozniak claimed in an interview that Apple would have interesting announcements this year.

Easier to sell my used netbooks with Atom M270 and 1 gig of ram on
http://www.android-x86.org/
to the Hispanic buyer than
http://www.puppylinux.com/
Just the way it is on the border. It takes a Texan to know where I am coming from on this. I already sold one with a missing arrow right key even. They got a app for that.
My sales of my older model netbooks are paying for my newer
http://www.macomp.com/companiontouch.asp
netbooks with change left over for beer money..
Selling my BlackBerry Phone and my Iview Android Tablet also
on the radio.
Puppy or any other Gnu/Linux just does not sell out here.
Just the way it is.
It does not mean Android is better than.
But dumbed down and name recognition (Blackberry) is a hell of a selling point.
Especially to ignorant opinionated people handing you money for your wares.
Life is good.

Oh. When I sell this one.
which is the exact type of netbook I am selling. But it will have 1 gig of ram instead of 2 when I sell it. Plus The SSD will be swapped out with the touchscreen Pata 60 gig
drive.
Slackware will be gone and it will be a Android netbook also.
Because that is what sells fast.

By no means I'm an Android expert. But according to Wikipedia Android doesn't run on Java. Android apps run in a virtual machine that isn't the Java VM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalvik_%28software%29Gnu/Linux: Doesn't Run on Java; very secure
Android: Runs on Java; not at all secure
I can't see how Android is better.
edit
I take that to mean that Java is the source code, Java byte code is an intermediate format, and Dalvik is the final byte code format which runs on the Dalvik VM, which itself isn't the Java VM. I don't know how secure the Dalvik VM sandboxing really is, that's really the crucial point.wikipedia wrote:Programs are commonly written in Java and compiled to bytecode for the Java virtual machine, which is then translated to Dalvik bytecode and stored in .dex (Dalvik EXecutable) and .odex (Optimized Dalvik EXecutable) files; related terms odex and de-odex are associated with respective bytecode conversions.

AFAIK the Dalvik VM is a Java interpreter setup of some sort.
That said, I'm no programmer. Given that I'm also not a politician
I will gladly defer final judgment to those who are programmers, rather than "sticking to my guns" on an issue where I have no business doing so,
I will say one thing, however, that I do know for sure. I've used Android, and I've used real Linux, and I've used Windows, and I've (grudgingly) used MacOS X. There is exactly one way, in my experience, that Android is superior to Puppy and that is adoption. (Sadly, more people use Android than Puppy.)

OK, so I guess the Android Layer Cake Of Horror is a little thicker than I realized...
I thought it was --
1 App in Java-dialect code
2 Java interpreter in VM
3 Modded Linux kernel
But I guess it's --
1 App in Java-dialect code
2 Java-to-Dalvik on-the-fly porting mechanism
3 Dalvik interpreter in VM
4 Modded Linux kernel
Jeez, no wonder Android needs so much freaking power, it's got two layers of on-the-fly code interpreting in between Angry Birds and actual execution mechanisms... mind you, /any/ on-the-fly code stuff is going to slow things down considerably (because it has to be compiled as it's about to run, which delays running) but to do it /twice/ is truly maddening (and not just to the user!) not to mention unnecessary.
Or, as Luke Skywalker would say, "What a piece of junk!"
