My phone will update itself, so I allow it to do so when I am connected to WiFi.
The biggest problems with malware on an Android system is that people do not research what they install and when an app containing malware asks for permission to critical data on the phone, they just allow it. If folks did not think playing Angry Snails or Cutesy Apps were important, this type of issue would be lessened. I always research apps installed on my phone or tablet. This is mostly because I do not want a flashlight application to be sending me advertisements, but also because I want to make sure there is nothing bad about them listed on the net.
