Wary 5.1.1 won't recognize Broadcom BCM94212 Winmodem

Running Wary 5.1.1 (oldest alternate .iso--2.6.30.5 kernel)
Broadcom dial-up modem--stock #BCM94212

Can't get PupDial to recognize it with auto-probe.
Blacklisted and erased default driver and rebooted; no difference.
Any ideas?

I am given to understand there is no way this modem can be made to work in Linux, period.

Don't know if pupdial is the right application for it .
Was using pupdial in the beginning to connect to 3G WAN , since it was more familiar to what I knew at that time ( wvdial syntax ) .
Have switched to pgprs-shell and pgprs-connect .

I can't test; that modem died last week.
(which reminded me of this thread)
It has since been replaced with the (more or less) Puppy-friendly Intel 536EP. :)
