No Headphone Audio On Asus

Hi

Using Puppy 5.2.8 on an asus netbook 1001pxb pc, there's no audio coming from the headphone jack, but there IS audio coming from the speakers.

I do get headphone audio in windows and puppeee.

When i run the ALSA soundcard selector wizard, it finds:

hda-intel Intel Corporation N10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Control
legacy Probe: legacy ISA (non-PnP) chips
usb-audio Override: USB Sound Device
aoa Override: Apple Onboard Audio

I believe the hda-intel is currently used.

There's no headphone slider in the ALSA mixer.

Any ideas?

Asus, too, eh? Well, I think the kernel will surely relieve us of this plague of "softphone jacks" eventually.

I don't know of a distro where this isn't an issue, do you? If we knew an exception, a local solution might come much more easily.

headphones on my asus eee pc work in the (so far) phenomenal AV Linux

my mistake, for some reason i thought av linux was a puppy distro (maybe saw it mentioned in the puppy forum?). Anyway, no offense to puppy.

I have the same netbook and the same problem as described in the first post, additionally my microphone appears not to be working, however in spup (RC) everything (speakers/headphone/microphone) is working fine.

I solved the problem, basically I remastered Lucid with a new (from slacko) kernel after this method:

Thanks for the instructions - I've tried them and all goes well. I don't think there is any need to use edit-sfs by the way - you can just copy direct from the kernel .sfs

It's a bit more complicated in terms of the number of steps to go through than the original way above, but the advantage is that you end up with a Puppy with the correct identity and pointing at the correct repository.

The steps I used were:

1. Boot a RAM only target system (in my case lupu515) with the minimum of setup options

2. Mount the kernel ISO (in my case wary104) and then mount the kernel SFS from within it

3. Delete the directories /etc/modules/, /lib/modules/, /lib/firmware/ from the running target system

4. COPY the directories /etc/modules/, /lib/modules/, /lib/firmware/ and /lib/network/ from the kernel SFS into the running target system

5. Unmount the kernel SFS but leave the kernel ISO mounted

6. Run the Remaster Live-CD utility from the Setup menu using the mounted kernel ISO and the default answers (unless you want to make other changes at the same time) to give either a CD image directory or an ISO file or a burnt CD as you require

7. You may need to rename the resulting .sfs to change _ to - or vice versa if the 2 systems use differing naming conventions. You may also need to update the version of the .sfs file using SFSConvert from Utilities - General Utilities menu.

N.B. it may look like the kernel ISO has been destroyed in this process however it hasn't and will reappear after a reboot.

Boot your new hybrid system.

The battery in the taskbar will not work with this, but you can install vattery (http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 33&t=69452) it will need acpitool to run.

An additional + to all this work is, that with acpitool the puppy can now hibernate

alsa-all, vattery, and the alsa-fix which I found on the forum are attached or can be found here: files.tine.pagekite.me

The simpler solution is of course to change to slacko...

--Headphones work in Racy Puppy. Does that help?

yes, the kernel from lucid 5.28 is older and does not support the hardware for the headphones, but the one from slacko does. I guess racy has a newer kernel, too. There are some derivatives from lucid (two headed and three headed dog) that might work, too, but I haven't tried. I decided to go the complicated way for the learning experience
Saluki works as well on my laptop, so it should work on yours, too (and I really like it
