test SimplePup, a puppy derivative

#1 Post by timcriger »

anyone interested in testing a puppy derivative??

i've fashioned a simple desktop from the already terrific Puppy we know and love. i made it to be a clean, fast, aesthetically-pleasing os to give to others; so it includes some common apps.

here are the highlights: ... iso weighs in at 74 MB
-stripped down (based on Empty Crust 1.0.7)
-XFCE window manager (with easy menu editor)
-Firefox 1.5.0.1 (with flash and gxine plugins)
-Thunderbird 1.5
-Abiword 2.4.1
-Perl 5.8 (so you can use ndiswrapper right away)
-Graveman 0.3.8 (and upgraded burniso2cd)
-Gxine 0.4.6 (with many added codecs)
-Mtpaint 2.10
-GQview 2.0.1
-some cleaned up graphics and stuff...
-... and of course, it still has all those other terrific Puppy qualities (stability, excellent hardware compatibility, helpful forum support, pupget management, etc.)

here is a screenshot (i'm currently running it now in ram)

Image

i'd like to know how it works on other machines.
let me know if there's interest in it, and i'll find a way to host the 74 MB iso.

thanks,
Tim

Tim,
I'll try anything once - when you get the ISO hosted somewhere let me know and I'll give it a go.

Anonymous FTP to /incoming at puppyfiles.us would be one option.

PM or email me once its there so I can move it to a directory to make it available for others.

Tim,

If you have the ISO file already positioned in a location that I can access from the web, then I can pull it directly from there. Also, if you upload it to my ftp server, I can coordinate getting it to Mark (MU/dotpups.de) and Ted (Ted Dog/puptrix.org) over the highspeed lines between our servers.

Looks great
here are some more fun possibilities - Shinux looks interesting. Though someone seems to have coded the whole thing in French for some strange reason . . . ;)

shinux uses the expose2 gtk theme using the pixmap engine, it can be downloaded from themes.freshmeat.

Lobster - I'd recommend that you continue with your other distros info in a new thread so as to not confuse others about its relevancy here.

Thanks, Tim
I will test it on an older IBM ThinkPad 500-series laptop and a desktop.

Please advise when posted somewhere it may be downloaded.

after a bit more tinkering and some Saturday morning cartoons, SimplePup 0.3 is ready to upload....
...but trying to upload to either mark or babbs using gftp tells me "no anonymous login."
so, we'll have to wait to get this figured out.
sorry for the delay.

I'll be more than happy to give it a test once it's up. I'd love to see it and maybe even get some ideas from it. So far it looks very nice, good selection of addons from an end users perspective.

For puppyfiles.us, the following settings work:

FTP Server: puppyfiles.us or ftp.puppyfiles.us
User ID: anonymous
Password: guest or your email address or anything else (keep it clean because I do check the logs)

If anyone has a problem with these settings, please let me know.

Hoorrayy!!! i'm not as crazy as i look (see avitar).
I've finally got SimplePup-0.3.iso uploading to Mark's ftp site, and should be available for download soon. Due to my unfamiliarity with gftp, i was entering the login info into the "proxy" config; yea... that didn't work. So, thanks for your patience with my stupidity.

After adding some media codecs, the iso size increased to 84 MB, but if desired, i can remove them to drop the size back to 73 MB. I'm eager to hear how it runs on other machines, mine is a five year old PIII 800Mhz 256RAM, and SimplePup is speedy, running in ram.

Hope you like trying SimplePup.
