Slax

#1 Post by Bligh »

Has anyone tried slax? It isn't a puppy, but it is a lightweight distro with a kde3 desktop. It is similiar to puppy in some ways.

Raffy has used it quite a lot. I have run it and think it is very good looking and easy to use. I think someone was funding coders and this has now stopped?
I also seem to remember it was possible one time to modify and use some of their modules in Puppy?

Would be too much to say I ever used it. I have tested if I could boot frugally and then tested if I was bright enough to get how to set up the firewall on it but I was not that bright. Very embarrassing.

And now it totally fail even to boot. I tested the Chinese version of Slax that is named Compact Distro Linux (CDLinux)

One of the better I have tested. Better in the sense that it had codex already installed and allowed me to do things that was not "permission" on other Slax.

They don't have any forum for the CDL in English only in Mandarin then say. And to ask in the ordinary Slax seems not fair. Okay LinuxQuestions but usually there are some nasty person making himself important there and almost trolling whatever one write.

Slax development has pretty much halted .... apparently Tomas (the developer) needs to deal with some real life issues for a while.
There is a fork though being developed and it's pretty good

I experimented with Slax, but it's getting a bit dated now.

I tried several times to load Porteus and it was impossible.
Sure I can do it on USB but I want it on the NTFS HDD and not on a USB.

Slax is a ram hog. Each module is loaded into ram and I don't think you can change that. So if like me you want more than 8 modules you need a 1GB+.

oh I did not know that. I only have 1GB so maybe it was too much. Maybe the script look into how much free RAM I had.

But the most surprising thing was this CDL which is pure Slax but with added things like Flashplayer and other thigns that standard Slax tell teh user to download. CDL is like SuperOS for Ubuntu. Prepared to be a full S that have what the newbie need.

It booted really well and then suddenly one day it was impossible to boot it again.

I guess me too lazy, I should just start a new and install it again and be more careful so it does not get corrupted. But I fail to learn the IPtable on it. It is set to allow on everything. I need to set it up like puppy has but I have no idea how do that.

I had up to about 42 modules. I never experienced what you did. I only had 512MB of ram.

Sorry :(, I meant roughly. The problem was I think :? it would not boot or got mucked up or just used up 80%ish of my ram or something.

I was saying basically for it to be of much use, you need a lot of ram (1GB+ish).

By 8 modules I meant big ones. Though now I think about again 28 sounded just about right.

note: I am basing what I type on not very good memory's . At the time, I might of just had 500MB of ram.

RAIDed disks

#10 Post by drongo »

SLAX can mount some types of RAIDed disks. So it can be a useful recovery disk for machines like servers.

I haven't tried doing this in Porteus yet.

And CDL slax version was the easiest for a newbie to get going if one can trust my experience.

So I have to install it again and test what I did that made it fail. I know I did fiddle with teh setting of the firewall. Sad they made that one so hard to use.

Can one learn how to set up slax firewall by reading some wikka on Puppy?

My experiences of Slax vs Puppy

#12 Post by Guy »

I used to be a regular Slax user & used to build live discs using the Linux Live scripts it is based on. In the end I moved on to puppy as it just seemed better in so many ways.

Puppy was faster, easier to remaster & could be installed to a Hard Drive, which was disabled in Slax because it apparently was not good for me. The Slax package management inherits Slackware's lack of dependency resolution, which can be overcome but is a pain in the proverbial when something needs a truckload of dependencies.

I also moved from Slackware to Debian based distro's so all my .deb packages are now compatible with Lupu. I have tried Slax as little as a year ago but never been tempted back. Slax is very good but IMHO Puppy is better.
