I just purchased an hp mini 210 2177nr with the dual core n550. i had a toshiba satellite previously with xp on it, and sometimes booted puppy via a usb flash drive.

i am donating the toshiba to a good cause, i swapped out the hard drives so i have a 500gb xp drive in the mini 210 now and the 250gb hp drive is in the toshiba working fine,

xp will not boot on the 210 so i used the usb drive and got puppy 5.1 working except for internet and clicking on the touchpad.

i am now using jolicloud because it has the correct drivers for the mini 210, but i don't like it and would much prefer to have puppy running well. jolicloud installer also wiped my puppy off the usb drive, but that is not a big deal since i have it somewhere on another hard drive or i can just reinstall it.

apparently getting the wifi drivers installed into puppy for the 210 is not trivial. it uses a broadcom adaptor. i think the model number is 4312 but not sure.

but i have never compiled drivers before so i would need to be walked through this process.

is there any way i can use the jolicloud wifi and touchpad drivers with puppy?

i tried downloading the drivers from hp and installing them under WINE but installshield presented some problems.

does fluppy work out of the box with the 210 2177nr?

what would be a good OS for this computer aside from jolicloud as i really don't like joli.

For a laptop with dual core CPU, I would be using Ubuntu Linux not Puppy Linux.

If you have a particular preference for Ubuntu (or any other distribution) then sure, go ahead and use it. But don't let the question of dual-core support interfere with your decision. The Puppy 4.x and 5.x series both have full SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processor) support. Puppy will fly on a dual-core machine.

Compiling kernel modules is a non-trivial process. Far better to install the modules that someone else has already compiled for you. See "How to install Broadcom STA driver on Puppy 5"

i tried to use that precompiled driver a few days ago with no luck

i tried again now after deleting the mentioned ssd and b43 drivers and it worked. so problem solved.

update:

the touchpad works only with moving and tapping, no clicks work.
