Two-thirds of web surfers fall prey to online crime

About two-thirds of Internet users globally and nearly three-quarters of Web surfers in the U.S. have been victims of online crime, according to a study to be released on Wednesday.

The top countries as far as reported victims are China, Brazil and India tied for second, and then the U.S., according to the findings of the study, titled "Norton Cybercrime Report: The Human Impact." More than 7,000 adults in 14 countries were interviewed for the study.

My sister wanted to see the latest Harry Potter trailer.
In order to view she had to download and install an add on.
Oh yeah?
She was tired and did so without thinking - she was using Windows. Guess what? . . . some sort of pernicious key logger/'security program' is in place.

A whole evening of trying to fix and still no luck. When using Windows she knows better than to load 'add ons'. In fact she knows better than to use Windows but she still does . . .

Should be using Puppy all the time.

1. If she was prudent enough to make [something like...] an image backup of the whole of the drive, made when all was well...

She could zero-fill the drive, and restore the image.

My wife had something like that happen while browsing in XP.
A scareware program installed and every application she clicked on brought up a window saying the application was infected.
I found the file at fault that had been installed, did a system restore to an earlier time using safe mode and deleted the corrupted file.
So she is now back to a usable OS until the next time.
