Cyber-wars

#1 Post by Lobster »

Will cyber wars make the clouds reign dry up?
http://mashable.com/2009/08/06/twitter-cyber-warfare/

Using on line computing assumes you can get online to your servers

The attacks so far would be using infected Windows machines
Many times I have known Windows users infected but carry on using their machines. They could then be used for such attacks.

Cyber wars are here. Military strategists see the disruptive and propaganda possibilities. Commercial and criminal interests are already manifesting global spam and blackmail operations.
Economic interests are also vulnerable.

Use Puppy. Stay safe. Protect the virtual world. :)

This appears to be a year old
The New War Zone – The Internet

August 11th, 2008 by Steven Hodson

........
There is no doubt that with our ever increasing reliance on the internet as a part of our daily lives that a country’s Internet infrastructure is going to become a prime target – especially in times of war. What worries me is that none of this is being discussed with the tech blogosphere. No one seems to be concerned with any possible repercussions should concentrated attacks from hackers backed by foreign powers. Just how safe will our online lives and data be in such a case of a cyber world war. Will we find ourselves just as bloodied and damaged there as we would on the streets of our real world.

I know this is something I would really like to know – how about you?
seems somewhat inevitable, I'd say

Warmongers run things!

so what do you expect....?

- sadly, all this is disguised as 'security concerns' in the media

I am personally very concerned about this subject.

And I agree that it was inevitable.

And it's not just governments and terrorists which concern me, it's organized crime and it's power behind the Internet, those who control the bots for money.

I've said it somewhere else, but I repeat it here: There is no shortage of people with bad habits to host bots. My workplace is full of them. A recent survey showed that 25% of people do not update their antivirus. I personally know of people who bought computers with antivirus installed, did not renew their subscriptions, and then kept on using their computers....for downloading music. It makes me sick.

I need the servers to keep running, but human history does not make me optimistic.

How do we persevere in the face of all this, friends?

Unsafe OS should be held accountable and sued for being unfit for purpose.
Until governments are willing to remove and criminalize lethal programming (as in people have died when critical machines use software that crashes)
for example (just at random) http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/20 ... e.politics
National health Service software running on Windows.
Ridiculous.

Just about ALL Uk Government software is windoze based, AND what's more, they try to force community groups to ONLY use it

They don't like MAC users, either....

....but linux......'what's that?' was the usual response, despite official "open source support".....since at least 2004...

http://www.govtalk.gov.uk/policydocs/po ... docnum=905

Re-announced in 2009....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7910110.stm

Hey ho!

In the Introduction to the 2004 pdf cited:
The Action Plan (June 2002) for the European Commission's initiative eEurope 2005: An Information Society for All, builds on the previous Action Pan (June 2000) which set the target "to promote the use of open source software in the public sector & eGovernment best practice through exchange of experiences across the Union". The new plan requires the development of an agreed interoperability framework to support the delivery of pan-Europen eGovernment based on open standards and encouraging the use of open source software
You've seen all the Government adverts for it, surely?

Could it be that Cyberwar is not so easy to implement IF people use open source software/OSes?

My policy on conspiracies is to create my own open conspiracy
or be part of Penguin Power . . .

FireFox has 30% of the user 'market'
IBM works for us, Google is good for us etc
Geeks are the new chic.

Resistance is futile.
