HELP! A friend has become disenchanted with Windows and won over to Linux. I'd like to install Puppy BUT he is on dialup with AOL. I don't want to change his ISP if I don't have to. I am looking for penggy4Puppy.tar.gz or a replacement package but I cannot find it ANYWHERE!! (Yes, i know i can go with a minimalist Deb-based distro and apt-get it...but i want to do Puppy if i can, right??)

I compiled it for you: Its used via command line, I had to compile a total of 3 packages to get it work, I couldn't really test it because I din't have dialup or Aol
to start it
open a terminal and type
penggy
it will tell you to edit
/usr/etc/penggy/penggy.cfg
basically you need to place the user name and password in it
read up about it, It will take some time, but if you read everything, you should be able to get it going, Keep me updated please

However, after doing some research over the weekend -- i fear he is paying almost double what he needs to and that AOL's interface will only slow him down. So far, i put FF and SeaMonkey on his pc and set SeaMonkey to not load java or pictures so that he can either use SM for speed or FF for a full browsing experience. I looked up some regular ISPs for a lot less (DUN - type, Linux-friendly) and am thinking they would be faster than AOL. What think ye?

It was a bit difficult finding the sources, but what the hay.
This day and age, he could probably get some sort of adsl for the same price that doesn't boot him every 4hrs. You might want to look into it

Oh, no ttuuxxx -- first, i appreciate your work; second, i talked with my friend this morning (he's the science teacher next room down the hall) and he thinks he wants to stick with AOL -- they will probably be around as long as any of the others and he probably doesn't want to change his address. Sooo when i get home tonight i'll be looking at everything you sent and hopefully get Penggy up and running on his pc! BUT my question is this: i figure that AOL is slower in Windows because of the interface; in Linux using Penggy, should an AOL connection be the same speed as any other dialup ISP?

Interesting story on the Science teacher, Mr. C. His skeleton is like, 30% titanium, anybody else would have retired on disability decades ago (we're talking up and down two flights of stairs every day)...one of the kids evidently got on his classroom computer (a Windows box) and inADvertently infected the whole LAN with adware to the point that we were found to be the source of significant spamming. I mean, RoadRunner (our ISP) actually threatened to quarantine us! He asked me to put Linux on it and NO Windows at all! He's been so satisfied he asked me to do the same for his home computer. So -- i guess we can be thankful to those spammers after all!!

Anyway, i will keep you posted on how it works. Hopefully, i won't be the only one to benefit, anyway.

Well, i installed the pet package you made and installed the guile files (or tried to) according to this thread. Even after a reboot, i go to terminal, type in "penggy" and get this:

ERROR: In procedure primitive-load-path:
ERROR: Unable to find file "ice-9/boot-9.scm" in load path

This is really not worth it, the more i think about it. If he is choosing dialup, he won't want his messages stored online, he'll want POP mail so he can wiew and write e-mail offline, plus the cost benefit. I REALLY appreciate the time you put into this stuff -- it helps make Puppy's the friendliest forum around. I don't want either of us throwing good hours after bad... but thanks again.

Face it, ttuuxxx, you just can't resist a challenge.
I found your penggy pet package awaiting me when i got up this morning; i had about ten minutes to download it and try it out before i left. After unpacking i went to terminal and typed "penggy" and instead of an error message, it said that that the username wasn't in the aol-secrets file. (Of course not, i hadn't added it!) I didn't have enough time to read the instructions and add the username and password, but long and short of it -- i think you've got it!

In case anyone else is watching this thread in the future, here are some instructions i found that may be helpful installing penggy.

I set up my computer (connected via DSL) with Puppy 4.1.1, customized it, adding various apps and tweaking settings. I liked what i had and did a remaster, which burned to a CD beautifully. I did NOT choose to personalize it according to my particular hardware, as i recall.
I took Tom's computer (the one for penggy/aol) and made it dual-boot: Windoze on hda1, a swap, and a full install of Puppy using my remaster on hda3. He needs a dialup connection, which i set up. Testing it, i find i can connect to the internet (according to PupDial) but i cannot navigate or send email or chat -- Mozilla is unable to load a page and nothing else can connect, either. However, the connection is there, it says.
Soooo -- i took out a pristine Puppy 4.1.1 CD and loaded it and found that it connects just fine -- of course... Confused
Do you have any ideas what i need to do to get completely online with my full install? I know i can just wipe hda3 clean and do a full install of a pristine 4.1.1 disk, then tweak away -- but i'd rather not. I'd like to use my remaster...this pc has been taking way too long already...
If you can think of anything obvious i can adjust, that would be great. Maybe there's some configuration file or user preference file i can just copy from the working 4.1.1 into the full install Puppy or something. Don't go spending more time on me, though...just the thoughts off the top of your head. You've spent too much time on me already!

Thats a strange one indeed!! Maybe you could post that one in the 4.1 bugs section, You'll probably get some help. I haven't used the remaster on 4.1, It could be broken like in puppy 3.0 with dougal remaster with vesa not working.

Done--thanks for the idea.

I never updated Penggy4Puppy tar bundle I made cause no access to AOL to test it. From what I heard it got to point it didnt work on newer Puppies.

Anyway, what goes around, comes around. When my ex had AOL dialup it was super stable, no drops, no time outs, no hour limits. Well dialup serivices are dieing, merging, and placing lot restrictions on hours (the unlimited is just a come on, have to read the fine print) so after lot hassle and lies from guy running my now former isp, I actually signed up with AOL which is now a halfway reasonable $10 a month.

Needed Penggy and noticed somebody had made a pet out of it. And works fine on Puppy 4.2 that I am using. However shame whoever felt need to delete my old package as it worked on the 0.x, 1.x, and 2.x Puppies. Doubt the new one will work on old Puppies. Different libraries. Plus mine was a fifth the size. Oh well way life is. I probably have old one on a floppy or cd someplace. And in reality probably never need it.

If you send me your old pet package, i can upload it and provide a link on this forum. Just send it thru a PM.

Anyone have a complete Pet for AOL dial up for Puppy 4.3 which is graphic (not command line) for a complete newbie?

purple - did you try ttuuxxx's pet a couple posts before yours? Click on his link, the username is "puppy" and the password is "linux" (ALWAYS without the quotation marks). Open it up with petget, the default program. Honestly, though -- be prepared for frustration. Number one -- most modems are tough to get to work with Linux... they are not "REAL" modems, but "winmodems" (a.k.a. "softmodems") designed for Windows and HATE linux, they rely on software (probably proprietary) built into Windows. I've had good success with ActionTec USB modems. Secondly, AOL is tough b/c it relies on Windows software as well. I ended up transferring my friend to toast.net and it was a LOT simpler than dealing with AOL.

The HP tower which is to be connected to AOL is not mine, but someone elses', and for which I have already gotten the the dial up modem working reliably with my ISP, (not AOL) which only uses Linux on its servers. I hate AOL because they waste the resources of a limited computer with their own Adware and Spyware. Also because of all the nonsense they foist off on their users, like the difficulty of logging on with a Linux based OS.

OK - I uploaded these to the ChurchPup repository. Right-click and choose "save link as," then after it finishes downloading click on the Penggyfull.pet -- it will self-exttract and self-install.

Immediately after I post this note I will start the download. I may go back over to that other guys digs in a day or two. I wish I could convince him to give up AOL. I think this will be the last time I will ever help anyone who insists on using Windows OR AOL on a limited computer.

Arranging to have Puppy Linux on this computer is my idea. He insists on having Windows 98 on this dog. I was inspired to offer to help because he paid "an expert" to install Windows 98 over Win ME who took him for 3 hours of technical support and swore it could not be done. I had to prove an expert wrong. I should not blame a young person for not realizing the issues raised installing Windows 98, it is like asking me who was the President that was six Presidents after Washington. It is ancient history to me and I really do not care.
