Guitar/audio effects screenshot using linux Surge synth

#1 Post by ciento »

I noticed it's much easier now to use the Surge synth effects on an
audio track (guitar/vocals mic'ed sounds in audio interface etc.
Screenshot attached for visual reference

1.In the central-top 'Patch Browser' area, there are presets
for Audio Passthru, mono or stereo, click the Category right-arrow
a few times to reach those presets.

2. Once a Passthru selected, in the panel just below the arrows,
you'll see that 'LATCH' is highlighted on the Polymode list,
formerly a mystery step to most maual-a-phobics)

3. To the upper-right, in the top row, go to the
'FX Bypass/Character' panel,
and click the 'Send' button, so it shows as orange.

4. Further right, and just below the Output meter, there are
effects chains, A and B, each having two effect slots, leading
to a pair of Master effects slots, which in my example,
have DLY (delay) and REV (reverb) selected, and the REV paramers
are displayed just below. (experiment with the routing arrows!)

5. To insert your first effect, click one of the rectangles
to open open a little 'Insert FX' widget

Click that widget, and the effects list
will be displayed, 10 effects, and an OFF button.
When an effect is chosen, it's parameters will be listed just below,
and when a different slot rectangle is selected.
a currently displayed parameter list
will be replaced the the effect selector widget.

(I had to move the mouse out of, and back into
the gui effects list to access the full list of effects choices,
as the parameter lists for the first effect or two can open quckly,
filling the little gui. Some bug to be squished)

6. On the far-left, middle panel (gray) there are sliders for
Input and Gain, so use these in conjuction with
your gear/daw audio levels, and on the far right,
the sliders for FX 1 and 2 return sliders, and the
Mix slider found in an effects parameter list.

Plenty of controls to achieve something special.

There are inexpensive used modeling guitar amps
with usb connection, and line/headphone outputs
for standard cable connections. These mostly have
decent amps, cabs, effects etc built in, and using
Surge to suplement or replace built-ins is pretty easy.

Now that school is out, and lay-offs are slowly
re-setting, it's a good time to gain some skillz
that will boost morale, without breaking the bank.

Fender Mustang I V1 amps should run $50-$80,
Line6 Spider IV and V, similar, Boss, Peavey, and Marshal
all have various versions, some with computer editors available.

Surge comes as a .deb package, that puppy package manager
sets up in /usr/lib/vst, with data in /usr/share/Surge, but I
moved those into /root/.vst

http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?pl ... ge&id=2931

and for compilers, a typical coders website:

https://github.com/surge-synthesizer/surge

Great work continues, nightly builds, and frequent
version releases. One of the best examples of open-source teamwork.

Cheers
